Avery Hill green travel
Parking arrangements and transport services are changing at Avery Hill Campus with the implementation of a new Green Travel Plan.
We want to encourage staff, students and visitors to consider where possible using alternative forms of transport before deciding to drive alone to the campus.
These pages explain why the changes are taking place, the benefits and the schemes and services that are being introduced to help you make green travel choices.
Why has the plan been produced?
- Legally as part of a council planning consent the university is required to implement a plan to reduce car use at the Avery Hill Campus.
- Operationally there is a need to address parking congestion on the campus.
- Globally there is need for all organisations to make a contribution to tackling dangerous climate change.
What are the changes?
- A charge to park your car on Avery Hill Campus from 1 September 2009.
- Big improvements to the Mansion Site "gravel" car park, Avery Hill Campus.
- A specialist car park operator to manage the car parks at Avery Hill Campus.
- Our own university-wide private car share scheme, called "5HARE".

- Reduced price bikes for staff through the government "Cycle to Work" scheme.
- Car club vehicles for hire by-the-hour stationed at Avery Hill and Greenwich Campus.
What are the benefits?
- All income raised from parking charges will be invested in green transport initiatives and managing the car parks.
- Less traffic and parking congestion anticipated on campus freeing up car parking spaces and making the campus environment more pleasant.
- More journey options to Avery Hill Campus for non-car drivers.
- Less harmful pollution and fewer greenhouse gases.
