Student experience Faculty of Architecture, Computing & Humanities

Helene describes her experiences on the Undergraduate Ambassadors' Scheme, a scheme which gives students the opportunity to gain classroom experience as one of their final year options.

" I am working with mature students at Orpington College. These are students with no mathematical background and many of them fear the subject. In one of the first lessons I attended, they were working with negative numbers (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing). One of the students just sat there shaking her head, obviously she had a block when it came to negative numbers. When they started working on their worksheet I was able to sit down with this student and tried to explain the topic in real life situations which I thought she might understand. You could see the light go on. Tears were running down her face, she stood up and gave me a big hug and waved her hands in the air. She had never been able to do anything with negative numbers, it just didn't make sense to her, but now she could. I don't know if the teacher would have had the time to spend with her. But I know that by being there more students get more help with the things they find difficult.

This is an experience that will stay with me forever. What a wonderful feeling."
