Adrian ThurstonA taste of corporate life at the world’s largest coffeehouse company was served up to students as the University of Greenwich hosted a talk by the legal chief of Starbucks UK (and Ireland).

Adrian Thurston, Legal Director and Company Secretary of Starbucks Coffee Company UK & Ireland, was the main speaker at the university’s latest Big Picture seminar.

Mr Thurston was the first lawyer for Starbucks in the UK, and has since established a high- performing legal team, which now comprises seven legal and regulatory professionals. He also gave students insights into earlier parts of his career, which included spells heading up the legal function of the MFI furniture business, and at Cable & Wireless, negotiating large telecommunications contracts for global clients

A member of Global Leaders in Law and the Law Society Commerce and Industry groups, Mr Thurston also spoke about how to maximise the impact and influence of a company’s in-house legal team – a subject of particular interest to the university’s Law and Business students.

The Big Picture seminar series, which is free to attend, attracts a range of high-profile speakers who share their expertise with staff, students and the public. Topics include entrepreneurship, leadership and management, financial forecasting, economics and the media.
