World experts gather to discuss Islamic financeA range of distinguished banking, business and branding experts came together at the University of Greenwich in a special event to honour the 9th World Islamic Economic Forum.

The event was also attended by some of the university’s students, recent graduates and alumni, and included a wide-ranging panel discussion on the subjects of Islamic finance, banking, branding and consumerism. Delegates from the world forum were also present.

The panel consisted of Lord Sheikh of Cornhill, Vice-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Islamic Finance and Diversity in Financial Markets; Anwar Zaidi, Chief Executive Officer of Habib Bank PLC UK; Nigel Denison, Director of the Bank of London and the Middle East PLC; John Grant, author of Made With: The Emerging Alternative to Western Brands; Dr Aleksander Stojanovic, Director of the Centre for Governance, Risk and Accountability at the University of Greenwich; and Jon Wilson, an expert in marketing and communications from the university's Business School.

Dr Wilson says: “We attracted a high calibre of international delegates and it proved to be a rich experience. Islamic finance is an exciting and fast-moving subject, and is rapidly expanding beyond ‘meat and money’ into cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fashion, entertainment and tourism.”

The 9th World Islamic Economic Forum, which took place in London last week (29 to 31 October), saw more than 1,800 senior managers and investors from Islamic countries coming together to discuss issues ranging from education and microfinance to health. More than a dozen global leaders also attended, with speakers including Prime Minister David Cameron, who vowed to tackle the financial exclusion of Muslims in Britain by encouraging the growth of Islamic finance.

Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Islamic Marketing, Dr Wilson also contributed to a book for the world forum, in which he analysed aspects of the $2.3 trillion Halal industry.
