Dr McGovern has been based in the Business School at the University of Greenwich since September 2015. Her major theoretical interest is in the later work of Pierre Bourdieu. Her research strands are in the areas of civil society and well-being in later life.

Dr McGovern is currently writing a monograph for Palgrave: "Small voluntary organisations in the 'Age of Austerity': Funding challenges and opportunities". She is also working on the associated topics of international coalitions of third sector and other organisations; and on a cost-benefit analysis of the value of volunteer 'labour' in hospitals.
