Ian Whitten moved to academia after almost two decades in the client-side of the marketing industry. In that time, he held various positions in well-known companies such as Konica, Philips Electronics and Honda. He also worked for a variety of smaller companies.

Between 2003–06 Ian worked as a freelance marketer, devising marketing strategies for over 20 organisations operating in fields as varied as financial services, healthcare and the charity sector. His most successful strategy increased his client's profit by 705% in just three years.

Ian holds diplomas in marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing and the Institute of Direct Marketing (passed with credit) as well as an MA from the University of Greenwich (passed with distinction). He also has a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Greenwich.

Currently, Ian is leader on five courses at Greenwich. He teaches on further four courses, ranging from the first-year undergraduate Principles and Practice of Marketing to post-graduate Managing Direct and Digital Marketing.

In 2014, Ian was co-author on a textbook "Principles of Direct, Database and Digital Marketing" with Professor Alan Tapp and Matthew Housden.
