Additional Statutory Checks

In addition to fulfilling academic conditions of entry, applicants for programmes relating to teaching, pharmacy, nursing, midwifery, social work and young and vulnerable people are required to undergo further statutory checks.

These include an Occupational Health Screening and a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

Applications are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and therefore all convictions, including cautions, boundovers and anything committed as a juvenile must be disclosed at interview.

These checks are administered by the Student Centre, Avery Hill Campus. The applicant will be contacted to arrange for these to be carried out once an offer has been made and accepted and when the academic requirements have been met.

If you previously lived outside the United Kingdom, you will need to obtain a Certificate of Good Conduct from the police in your own country in addition to obtaining CRB clearance. This certificate should be sent to the Student Centre.

Having a criminal record will not necessarily bar applicants from a place on a programme; this will depend on the circumstances and background of the offence. Failure to reveal information that is directly relevant to an offer may lead to the offer’s withdrawal.

All nursing, midwifery and social work programme candidates must have been granted:

  • settled residential status in the United Kingdom for three years prior to the start date of the programme for which they are applying
  • indefinite leave to remain in the United Kingdom

If you have any enquiries regarding these checks, please contact the Student Affairs Office on 020 8331 8444.
