EITHER

PGCE/CertEd or BEd awarded by a UK university or other recognised body

AND, typically, at least two years' full-time teaching or its part-time equivalent

OR UK Qualified Teaching Status

AND at least two years' full-time teaching or its part-time equivalent, following the successful completion of probation

OR The applicant is involved in vocational or adult education and training

AND has completed three years' full-time teaching or training or its part-time equivalent

AND has successfully completed a course comparable to the CertEd, resulting, where appropriate, in registration as a teacher in his or her particular field

OR The applicant has completed at least five years' full-time teaching or training or its part-time equivalent in postcompulsory education and training

AND has demonstrated to the programme leader, at interview or in writing, evidence of the ability to benefit from the programme and to reflect upon his or her professional practice

• The BSc Hons award is available to teachers of mathematics, science, engineering or IT, provided that the major project and Subject Updating course reflects their technical interests

This programme provides professional development for those working in the Lifelong Learning Sector. It enhances their contributions to the quality of provision in Lifelong Learning, supports theoretical appreciation of the major areas of educational scholarship and provides opportunities for participants to integrate learning with practice.

Students gain new skills and understanding in support of their professional role, as well as knowledge and an appreciation of the major areas of educational scholarship. The programme also provides a range of education studies, and students acquire the ability to reflect on and critically review professional practice and theoretical knowledge.

This programme is available by distance learning only. There are two intakes per academic year and programmes begin in September and January.

Content

The programme is divided into three areas:

  • Education Studies
  • Professional Studies
  • Organisation Studies

Students study the core courses Critical Thinking, Educational Research Methods and Personal and Professional Development. BSc Hons students must also complete the core course Subject Updating. Students pursuing an honours degree must also complete a major project.
