Val Sanders is a Senior Lecturer for Counselling in the Department of Psychology, Social Work and Counselling at the University of Greenwich.

Her principal theoretical interests include attachment theory, issues of bereavement and loss, and the links between attachment profiles and reflective capacity. Having worked in private therapeutic practice for over 15 years, Val also has experience of working in the NHS and previously in a supervisory capacity with several allied organisations.

Val joined the university in 2006 as a senior lecturer on the MSc Therapeutic Counselling programme, and also has current course leadership of Year 1 and the admissions administration for that programme.

Val's early postgraduate research explored the effects of attachment profiles on the development of gender identity with a group of psychologically androgynous males.

For her MA in Working with Groups, research study was on the developmental aspects of group processes, focusing particularly upon the exploration of how a group of students in training managed and tolerated Oedipal realities within the group.

More recently, her PhD research was on the nature of literary reading and its links to psychoanalytic method.
