Medway UTC opens its doorsThe state-of-the-art University Technical College in Medway, sponsored by the University of Greenwich, opened its doors to its first students today (Monday 7 September).

Billed as a new concept in secondary education, the UTC is the first of its kind in Medway and specialises in teaching construction, engineering and design subjects to students aged between 14 and 19.

The £11.4 million government-funded college has a fresh outlook on education. It is run like a business, pupils wear smart dress but not uniforms, and are in school for longer but leave without homework. Medway UTC students are based in a brand new building located in Chatham Waters and will be using a range of top facilities.

Students have now begun their 'springboard' week, tackling activities designed to help with their transition to the UTC. In this first week of term, they are also spending a couple of days at Greenwich's Medway Campus.

Dr Stuart Ashdenden, Faculty Operating Officer for the university's Faculty of Engineering & Science, says: "Medway UTC will be a fantastic asset for the region and we are excited at the opportunity to play a leading part in providing first-class education and skills for the many young people who will be learning here.

"Throughout their studies, UTC students will have easy access to state-of-the-art facilities on offer at our nearby Medway Campus, and will also be able to take advantage of the superb links with industry that the university enjoys.

"A guiding mission of the university is to help all students achieve their full potential, and to see them embark on satisfying, rewarding careers, and we bring this ethos to the UTC too. This is the start of a truly significant new chapter of education in Medway, which will bear long-term results both for the students themselves and for business and industry in the region."

Medway University Technical College is part of a wider movement of UTCs across the country: as of this month, 41 UTCs will be open. Medway UTC has seen an exceptional number of applications and it has recently been congratulated by the Patron of the UTC movement, HRH Prince Andrew, for what is has already achieved.

Dr Karon Buck, Principal of Medway UTC, says: "I am delighted to welcome our students. This is the beginning of a very exciting journey for everyone involved. Our fantastic facilities, teachers and employer sponsors will provide the very best education to our new students."
