Professor Tony KochharPrestigious new prizes have been awarded to five University of Greenwich students in recognition of their outstanding work.

The inaugural Shoulderdoctor Awards have been set up to reward those studying sports science, or strength and conditioning, within the Faculty of Engineering & Science at the Medway Campus.

The winners of these awards are Tikisha Antoine and Adam Berreen (both studying for a BSc in Sports Science), and Stephen Corner (MSc Strength & Conditioning), who each receive £1,000.

In addition, two students have been awarded The Shoulderdoctor/FIFA Football Medicine Strategies Award. This will enable them to travel to Milan in March and attend the Annual International Conference on Sports Rehabilitation and Trauma in an all-expenses-paid trip.

The winners were Stephen Mann (PhD Science) and Jack Miller (MSc Strength & Conditioning).

The Shoulderdoctor Awards, which are to become an annual event, are the brainchild of Tony Kochhar, Visiting Professor at the university’s Centre for Sports Science & Human Performance. He says: “My hope is that these awards will permit successful students to continue to strive for academic excellence and produce new innovations at the university. I’ve been deeply impressed with the calibre of our students within the Faculty, and all our winners fully deserve their success.

“I’m already looking forward to hearing about the levels of excellence attained by students as they compete for next year’s awards.”

One of the winners, Stephen Corner, who plans to begin a part-time PhD alongside his current work with Coventry City Football Club, says: “I was thrilled to win a Shoulderdoctor 2014 Award. My MSc in Strength & Conditioning has been interesting, enjoyable and, at times, intense, and to win an award is a definite highlight.”

Professor Kochhar, a pioneering researcher in the field of sports medicine, is also an orthopaedic surgeon in central London specialising in shoulder and upper limb injuries. He was the only shoulder surgeon to feature in the Tatler Doctors Guide 2013, which recognised the most respected surgeons, doctors and medical experts in the UK.
