Having graduated in Mechanical Engineering, Dr Stuart Ashenden worked as a development engineer at Lucas CAV, involved with the development of diesel fuel injection equipment for automotive applications.   Returning to university to undertake a PhD in bulk materials handling and in particular, multi-phase flow, and then in 1989 became  lecturer at the University of Greenwich teaching fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and bulk solids handling.

Remaining an active researcher in bulk materials handling for a number of years, the relocation of Engineering from Woolwich to Medway in 1996 when his priority became student recruitment and establishing the campus at Medway.  The operation and the ongoing development of the Medway Campus and maintaining the partnership with the partner universities at the Medway Campus.

Following a period as acting Dean of Engineering, Stuart was appointed as Faculty Operating Officer for the Faculty of Engineering and Science in January 2013.

Dr Stuart Ashenden was appointed as Faculty Operating Officer for the Faculty of Engineering and Science in January 2013.As a member of the Senior Management Team of the University, he is responsible with the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty for the strategic and functional management of the Faculty.  This includes managing the effective running of all of the technical and administrative support processes, managing the support staff and strategic management of the Faculty's budget.  In addition, Stuart has a broader Campus remit, chairing the Campus Operating Group for the University and represents the University with respect to the governance of the partnership between Kent and Canterbury Christchurch Universities at Medway.  In particular, he has chaired the Steering Group that has overseen the development of the shared new Student Hub at Medway

In terms of research, Dr Stuart Ashenden maintains an interest in Bulk Solids Handling and continues to be involved with the examination of research students.

He has extensive experience of developing and maintain partnerships with other academic institutions from local schools, our campus partners through to international partner institutions and has been involved with partnership approvals and reviews for Greenwich and other UK HEIs.
