Senior Lecturer

Department of Engineering Science

Faculty of Engineering & Science

Olga was appointed Senior Lecturer in the Department of Engineering Science in July 2016. She holds a Diploma in Civil Engineering by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece (2003, Distinction), a MSc in Soil Mechanics and Engineering Seismology from Imperial College (2004, Distinction), and a PhD in Civil Engineering specialising in Engineering Seismology by Aristotle University (2010, Distinction). During her PhD she spent a year at the Engineering Institute of Universidad Nacional Autonoma (UNAM) de Mexico.

As postdoctoral researcher, she spent a year at the Seismic Risk Assessment Section (BERSSIN) of the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) and three years at the Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTerre) of Joseph-Fourier University, Grenoble, France (2012-2014). During that time she was visiting scholar at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI) of Kyoto University, Japan, and spent six months as invited scholar at the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) of the University of California at Berkeley, US.

During 2015-2016 she was Senior Researcher at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences of the Helmholtz Centre Potsdam, Germany. At the moment, she is also close to completing an undergraduate degree in English Language and Literature at Aristotle University.

Olga's research area is Engineering Seismology and she is also strongly interested in seismology and geotechnical earthquake engineering. Her research focuses on seismic hazard and ground motion, and her specific topics of interest include site effects and amplification (topographic and basin edge effects, empirical and numerical analysis of site response), ground motion attenuation (high-frequency attenuation and the kappa parameter), and ground motion uncertainty and variability (the sigma parameter). Some of this research is strongly connected to the seismic safety of critical infrastructure and was undertaken within large international ground motion projects of the nuclear sector.

Olga has also consulted and acted as panel expert for several such industrial projects. She has co-supervised one PhD thesis, has been a mentor for two postdoctoral, two doctoral, one postgraduate and one undergraduate project, and has delivered seminars and invited lectures in several countries.
