Description

Drug eluting stents for the treatment of coronary artery diseases

Presented by Dr Dionysios Douroumis

Despite all the benefits of drug-eluting stents (DES), concerns have been raised over their long-term safety, with particular reference to stent thrombosis.

In order to address these concerns, recent advances in stents include: DES with biodegradable polymers, DES that are polymer-free, stents with novel coatings, and completely biodegradable stents. Many of these stents are currently undergoing pre-clinical and clinical trials and early results seem promising.
This lecture explores:

  • The rationale behind drug-eluting stents
  • Risks and expectations after stent implantation
  • Scope for improvement
  • The future of DES.

New stent technologies are expected to develop more novel stents, take into account patient characteristics and to improve long-term clinical efficiency and safety.
