Introduction

Research in engineering is focused on achieving societal improvements through tackling socially important questions. The underlying drivers include increasing sustainability of all areas of daily living, greater empowerment for individual users of technology and developing new products and systems that are focused firmly on people's wants, needs and aspirations.

Engineering is committed to the notion of the indivisibility of research and teaching activities. We believe that we can only offer the best teaching experience for our students through active research programmes. Engineering research is undertaken in our extensive purpose-built labs, which feature many unique research tools. The labs are currently undergoing refurbishment, scheduled to finish by September, to ensure that they are state-of-the-art. The refurbished facilities will include a brand new robotics laboratory, including our very own RoboThespian, as well as updates to our rapid prototyping, materials, communications and design facilities.
