Dr Alec Coutroubis has been principal lecturer in engineering management since 2005, and before that senior lecturer since 1996.

His professional career included being the managing director of Alco Shipping Co., Piraeus, Greece and managing director, Shipping, Transport Insurance Management (STIM) SA, Luxembourg. He is the founder and co-managing director of MDT (Micro Diamond Tools) Ltd, Greece, and was also a senior executive Credit Commercial de France, Paris, Bahrain and Athens. He was also the treasurer at The Arab Investment Company, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Dr Coutroubis is the programme leader in engineering management.

He is a member of the Academic Council, the learning enhancement coordinator, School of Engineering, the chair of student support and learning enhancement committee. He is a member of the Educational Development Unit and the link tutor for New York College.

Dr Coutroubis has research interests in diamond tools for sawing and drilling hard materials, marine engineering systems, maritime policy, management and education. He has previously researched environmental engineering and renewable energy, engineering enterprise, engineering management and global engineering.

Along with an interest in accounting and finance, he is also concerned with environmental engineering, technopreneurship, strategy and management and engineering law. His experience in the marine industry  means he also researches marine engineering, vessel and fleet technical management, commercial management of ships, shipping law and marine insurance, maritime policy and maritime security.

Funded research projects

Dr Coutroubis has studied diamond and abrasive tools and applications in building materials and natural stone processing in a thesis titled,'Measuring Performance and Safety of Diamond Tools in Sawing and Drilling Operations' (EU Supported Research Programme).

He was also the research project co-ordinator on 'Establishment of Standards for the Measurement of Performance and Safety of Diamond Tools in Sawing and Drilling Operations', which had a project budget of €760,000.
