Dr Satya Shah has been working within the department of Applied Engineering and Management (AEM), Faculty of Engineering Science at University of Greenwich since 2010, firstly as Senior Lecturer of Technology Management and more recently as Principal Lecturer of Engineering and Technology Management (2015).

His diverse academic background ranges from Electronic Engineering to Product Innovation in Service Sector and Manufacturing. He holds a PhD in Information Systems Management from Cranfield University UK, and an MBA in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Management from University of Exeter, UK.

Through his research, teaching and consultancy he has made contributions in the areas of technology management, supply chain, product development and innovation within the manufacturing and service sectors. Recent work includes empirical and systemic design methods research on how social media could be employed as an alternative learning mechanism in improving students learning behaviour patterns and to further improve their employability prospects.

He has 15+ years of experience in Higher Education as an academic and education management specialist. He currently sits as an advisor in the Sector for Skills Council UK, the STEM Networking Group (Science, Technology Engineering and Maths in UK) and is a reviewer for International Journals and Conferences within his subject expertise.

Satya also regularly presents at international recruitment fairs on opportunities for studying in United Kingdom. His previous positions were as a Lecturer and Programme Manager at University of Exeter and prior to that as Doctoral Researcher at Cranfield University UK.

Current research interests includes using new technologies and engineering methods for design and servicing of engineering products and systems within service and manufacturing sectors such as new product development, sustainable manufacturing, supply chain management and information & knowledge management areas. Satya is currently involved with the research "Centre of Innovative Product Development and Manufacturing" to support in research activities and to further develop the teaching portfolio of the centre within innovative product development, product innovation and technology management areas. Product Development and Sub Supplier Integration & Collaborative Framework (2011-2015)

PhD Project - Supported by Ford Motor Company UK

The aim of this research is to develop a framework for improved integration of component and sub assembly part suppliers during global automotive product development project.

Areas for Future Research

  • The research looks into the generalised internal responsibilities and interrelationships between numerous original equipment manufacturers (OEM) product development (PD) departments, and the linkages into the external supply network to be mapped. This could be further applied within other sectors and across manufacturing departments.
  • Future work from the research aims to looks at identifying structure of the overreaching global product development system and the engineering deliverables within the engineering and manufacturing environments.
  • Mapping of the business processes within the product development teams to improve transparency and synchronization of the flow of information and knowledge transfer across dispersed teams within an extended enterprise.

Improving Testing Facilities Performance to Reduce Time-to-Market for New Product Development (2012-2016)

EPSRC Project – Jointly funded by EPSRC UK and Cummins Power Generation, UK

The aim of this research is to improve the overall performance of the testing facilities in order to reduce the time-to-market of new product development by generation of new enabling technologies.

Areas for future research

  • The research focuses on improving the overall performance of the testing facilities within product development environments, hence the framework can be further applied to other sectors including the manufacturing and service based environments.
  • The research outcomes could further be expanded to develop a Knowledge Management framework to capture the knowledge transfer and exchange within the product development stages.
  • The research also aims to improve communication and data management aspects for better performance within enterprises and to provide better sustainable solutions within companies which require testing facilities within their environments.

INTERAG - Benefits Project

The aim of this research is to model different business processes and the interaction models within manufacturing and product service environments during the development of innovative products.

Areas for future research

  • The research focuses on the state of art and generic product lifecycle management (PLM) activities and the process modeling tools adopted within industry mainly manufacturing and product development environments. This could be further applied in other sectors such as service based environments.
  • A future KM (Knowledge Management) framework could be develop to map and capture the knowledge and practices adopted within product development teams.
  • Further studies related to development of collaborative platforms between the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and suppliers within manufacturing and automotive sectors.

Integration of Product Development & Supply Chain Management processes (2010-2013)

PhD Project - Funded by Pakistan Research Council

The aim of this research was to develop a methodology for integrating the product development process with supply chain within an extended enterprise for improved decision making.

Areas for Future Research

  • This research only focused on automotive sector to investigate the effect of the integration of SCM with NPD; however this could be further applied across other business sectors.
  • The other aspect which can lead into the future research is by exploring further towards the Tier 1 supplier links with Tier 2 supplier (which supplies the raw material to Tier1); different key decision points can be emerged. Research can be done in that area to categories these points and then re-design the framework which will work as a generalized framework for all the business sectors within extended enterprise.
  • To develop an ideal development of methodology for NPD-SCM integration based on enterprise framework, rather than just the focus on new product development.
