Since 2011, Zigan has been a lecturer in thermo-fluid mechanics at the University of Greenwich.

Previous roles

  • Research Fellow in developed multiphase flow simulations of scale formation in pipelines using OpenFOAM at the University of Leeds (2010-2011)
  • Associate Lecturer, University of Surrey (2009-2010)
  • Research Fellow, developed multiphase flow models for powders in silos, University of Surrey (2008-2009)
  • Won the 2009 IMechE Bulk Material Handlings Award for Innovation
  • Committee member of the Particle Technology Special Interest Group (IChemE)

Dr Zigan's research activities are contributing to the understanding of particulate materials in multiphase flow regimes in small scale and industrial processes.

His principal area of research is to develop theoretical models for industrial challenging powder handling processes. Some of his research activities include; studying the impact of particle formulation processes on material handling properties (eg. segregation, transport properties of particulates);analysing particle samples using optical methods (e.g. AFM and SEM) to increase the understanding of the complex linkage between particle properties and material handling in industrial processes;and developing modelling tools for predicting the particle behaviour in multiphase flows (using simulation approaches e.g. DEM and CFD).

The key contributions of this research to industry are the delivery of a holistic scientific approach from particle analysis to scale up experiments in the university's research laboratories.  This research is enhancing the integration of systematic modelling approaches into industrial formulation and handling processes.

Other areas of his research interests include the scaling of pipelines in the oil industry, algae growth in bio reactors and biomass handling/ process optimisation and testing.
