Dr Melis is a Senior Lecturer at University of Greenwich and previously did his PGCert in Higher Education at the university.

Before that, he worked in the European Patent Office, The Hague, The Netherlands as a patent examiner and was a COE Fellow, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan.

He studied his PhD in Digital Systems – Computing at Imperial College London, Department of EEE, London, UK, titled 'Memory Architectures for Reconfigurable Computers'.

He also received  an MSc (Distinction) in Analogue and Digital Integrated Circuit Design for his work titled: 'Implementation of image registration algorithm for watermarked data on a configurable computing platform'.

His first degree was as an industrial engineer in electronics (Option Design Technologies) from KHBO - KIHWV; Oostende; Belgium. His thesis title was 'Study, optimisation and implementation of MPEG-4 audio coding on a multimedia processor'.

  • Dr Melis is a senior member at the IEEE, serves as counsellor for the student branch at the University of Greenwich and is chair for membership development in the UK & RI Section.
  • He is a member of HiPEAC (European Network of Excellence on High Performance and Embedded Architecture and Compilation) and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Dr Melis teaches several subjects in the area of digital electronics, artificial intelligence, cybernetics and robotics. His research interests are quite diverse and aim towards holistically designed systems, which he applies in the area of biologically-inspired computer architectures and sustainable energy generation and management.

Dr Melis is interested in finding new architectures, which overcome some of the problems with the current von-Neumann computer architectures, or biologically inspired computers as Dr Melis prefers to call them. These architectures focus on the dataflow (storage and communication) within computers and take a look at communication in biological systems as an inspiration for improvements. In relation to this subject, he is also very interested in new technologies or devices like the memristor that will allow for better implementation of these new ideas into real hardware. This also touches closely to the field of quantum physics, where the world as such, including electronics, is looked at from a different angle, since this would allow for computers to be implemented in other ways, with the purpose of improving computational efficiency. The design of these new computer architectures incorporates hardware as well as software developments to ensure a solution that results in truly intelligent devices. While current applications to test these developments lie in the speech/voice recognition area, it is envisioned that this will soon also move into other application domains.

Additionally, Dr Melis also performs a significant amount of work in the area of sustainable energy generation and management. This includes improving the efficiency of existing technologies as well as looking at alternative methods of generating energy, reducing energy consumption and providing appropriate storage where required.

Funded research projects

As a principal investigator, Dr Melis received funding to build a prototype of a system that improves solar panel efficiency of existing panels up to 30% and a project that looks at building an associative memory for real life applications.

Furthermore, he was part of the university team working on the ECOTEC21 project, which is an InterReg project looking at the installation, management and use of CHP systems running on biofuel.
