Dr Yi Wang received his BSc and MSc in Physics from the University of Science and Technology Beijing, China, in 1998 and 2001 respectively, and his PhD degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, UK, in 2005.

His career began as a research fellow in 2004 with the Emerging Device Technologies Research Centre at the University of Birmingham, working on high-frequency devices for communications and sensors using special materials (such as superconductors, ferroelectric materials, SU-8 photoresists), novel structures (such as left-handed metamaterials) and micro-fabrication techniques (such as MEMS and micromachining). In 2011, he became a Senior Lecturer at the University of Greenwich.

Yi Wang has published over 80 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, and presented in many conferences, workshops and meetings. He has a breadth of knowledge and experience with microwave/terahertz circuit design, microwave and antenna measurements, micro-fabrications, and electronic materials. His research has benefited greatly from close links with industries including ESTEC / European Space Agency, Huawei, BAE Systems, and National Physical Laboratory. He also had fruitful collaboration with academic partners in the UK (Birmingham, Queen Mary, Kent) and aboard (Chinese Academic Sciences, Southeast University, Ningbo University, CTTC Barcelona Spain).

He is a member of EPSRC Associate Peer Review College and a regular reviewer for a number of journals and conferences, including IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, IEEE Transactions of Antenna and Propagation, Proceedings of the IEEE, IEEE Microwave and Wireless Components Letters, IEEE Antennas & Wireless Propagation Letters, IET Microwaves, Antennas and Propagation, Electronics Letters, Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering, Physica C, Superconductor Science & Technology, Micromachines.

Dr Wang leads a research group focusing on two research themes:

(1) Microwave device technology and theory

Many new challenges facing the world are finding solutions from microwave (300 MHz – 300 GHz) technologies. 5G communications demand smaller, better and cleverer (adaptive, reconfigurable, multi-role) microwave components. New generation satellites desire lighter and flexible payloads. Hospitals and patients will benefit greatly from wireless sensors for remote health monitoring, non-invasive diagnostics and treatments. My research looks into

  • Synthesis and application of novel multi-port filtering networks (MPFNs) for signal-distribution devices, such as multiplexers
  • Multifunctional microwave devices, such as integrated filter-antenna
  • Wireless sensors for health monitoring
  • Device technologies using LTCC, 3D printing and micromachining.

(2) Millimetre-wave / terahertz devices for metrology and sensors

Terahertz (THz) wave is the spectrum between microwave and far-infrared light and relates to the frequencies from 300 GHz to 3 THz. It is also known as sub-millimetre wave. It is widely known that THz wave technology holds great promise for emerging industrial and scientific applications including security screening, remote sensing, non-destructive testing, material characterisation and communications. Because of immature device technologies, this part of the spectrum hasn't been extensively utilised. The general objective of my research is to produce high-performance key components for future terahertz communication systems, metrology instruments and biosensors. Many of these devices will be enabled by micro/nano fabrication techniques. My research interests include

  • Components and systems for metrology and material characterisation
  • Micromachining based passive circuits and antennas
  • Frequency selective surfaces and metamaterials
  • Terahertz resonators
