Dr Guest is a forensic scientist and an expert in Bloodstain Pattern Analysis.

Jennifer graduated from the University of York with first class honours in biology. As part of her undergraduate studies she completed a placement year working in research and development at the Forensic Science Service. Whilst there she worked on the validation of the DNA profiling system, SGMplus for implementation into casework and was responsible for its validation for use on degraded DNA samples. She also worked on optimisation of DNA extraction from single hair roots and carried out a review of anomalous DNA profiles on the National DNA Database.

Jennifer studied for her PhD at the National Institute of Medical Research, Mill Hill, London, in the laboratory of Dr Qiling Xu. Her doctoral research was on the role of p21 activated kinase (pak) in early zebrafish development. Jennifer identified, sequenced and characterised two novel zebrafish pak genes; pak2a and pak2b. Morpholino knockdown studies were used to identify their function in early zebrafish development, with particular focus on the formation of the zebrafish lateral line system and the roles of pak2a and pak2b in cell migration.

After completing her PhD in 2004 Dr Guest joined the Metropolitan Police Service. She worked initially in the chemical development of fingerprints both in the laboratory and at scenes of crime and subsequently as a multi-disciplinary and scene reporting forensic scientist. Dr Guest has been the lead scientist in the examination of over a hundred cases of murder, attempted murder, GBH and sexual assault and has worked on a number of high profile cases. She is an expert witness, has testified in crown court on numerous occasions and has been commended by the Common Serjeant of London for her work.

Dr Guest has lectured on Forensic DNA analysis at the Jill Dando Institute, UCL; City and Islington College; and Queen Mary University London. After completing an award in Education and Training in 2014 she joined Greenwich University in 2015 as Senior Lecturer in Forensic Science.

My research interests are driven by my background as a practising forensic scientist and my knowledge and experiences in the field of bloodstain pattern analysis.

I am particularly interested in enhancement and development techniques for both fingermarks and shoemarks in blood. Work in our department aims to improve on current techniques and develop novel methods to meet the needs of forensic examinations both in the laboratory and at scenes of crime.

Our research also aims to address some of the current pertinent issues in bloodstain pattern analysis. We are investigating novel methods for reliably determining the age of bloodstains and to examine molecular changes to bloodstains over time. We are also looking at novel methods for identifying the presence of microscopic bloodstains on clothing and other items.
