Faculty of Engineering & Science

Dr Vivek Trivedi obtained his degree in pharmacy from the Shri G.S. Institute of Technology and Science, Indore, India (Rajiv Gandhi Technical University), in 2002. He worked as a scientific representative in Dr Reddy's Lab Ltd., India before moving to UK in 2003 for his MSc in pharmaceutical sciences.

After the completion of his MSc he joined Phoqus Pharmaceutical Plc as a development scientist. Here he was responsible for the development and characterisation of coating formulations to be used with novel electrostatic dry powder deposition technology (EDPDT). During his stay in Phoqus he worked on projects funded by Unilever, Cordis and GlaxoSmithKline.

He returned to University of Greenwich in 2006 to join the department of Medway Sciences where he carried out his PhD with Professor John Mitchell entitled: 'Preparation of solid core drug delivery systems via supercritical fluid processing of fatty acids'.

Dr Trivedi joined the School of Sciences at the University of Greenwich as a lecturer in January 2010. He completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCert), from the School of Education, University of Greenwich and received the fellowship of the Higher Education Academy in 2012.

Dr Trivedi's research areas include pharmaceutics (formulation and drug delivery), material processing and pharmaceutical analysis. A brief summary of his research interests is as follows:

Novel Drug Delivery Systems

Dr Trivedi is interested in the development of novel oral drug delivery systems for proteins and peptides. He is currently working on a delivery platform known as Solid Core Drug Delivery System (SCDDS) for the delivery of bio-molecules. This entails incorporation/immobilisation of bio-molecules onto inorganic host materials which improves their thermal and chemical stability. These biologics on the inorganic hosts are then coated with the suitable excipients to target them to colon where release and absorption occurs. This approach can potentially provide sustained release and safe passage to a drug to the lower intestine where it can be released and absorbed.

Dr Trivedi's work also includes development of various strategies to improve aqueous solubility of highly lipophilic APIs. He is interested in the preparation of cyclodextrin-drug complexes in non-aqueous media. The work in his group also involves preparation of solid lipid nanoparticles and self emulsifying drug delivery systems for the solubility enhancement.

Material processing by green technologies

Another focus of Dr Trivedi's research is the application of novel green technologies such as supercritical fluids and sonoprocessing. Supercritical fluids can be defined as substances above their critical pressure and temperature and can be used as a suitable media for the processing of various pharmaceutically important molecules. Dr Trivedi is primarily interested in the application of CO2 due to its low critical pressure and temperature. Furthermore, supercritical CO2 provides non-aqueous, organic solvent and oxygen free media for the processing of biomolecules.

Sonoprocessing is the application of high-power ultrasound to process materials. Sonoprocessing is known to increase extraction rates, promote crystallisation with the formation of finer crystals and homogenisation resulting in sable emulsions with fine droplets. Dr Trivedi studies the use of high-power ultrasound in the preparation of solid lipid nanoparticles for the delivery of water insoluble molecules.
