Accident Reporting and Investigation

This half day course is aimed at all those responsible for investigating accidents and incidents within faculties and directorates.  The session provides training in understanding causes, contributory factors, investigation gathering techniques and analysis, with a view to producing an action plan to prevent recurrence.

Display Screen Equipment (DSE)

Under the DSE Regulations 1992 there is a legal requirement for the University to provide information, instruction and training to DSE users to help them identify risks and safe work practices.  This training is provided to all staff deemed DSE users by way of an online DSE training and assessment package supplied by WorkRite.  To ensure that DSE Users have understood the training the online course will be followed by a short test. Once the training and test have been successfully completed the DSE user will be requested to complete a self-assessment of their workstation.  Any issues resulting from this assessment will then be escalated to the local DSE Assessors for action.

Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessor

This one day course will provide nominated DSE Assessors with the knowledge and confidence to be able to investigate and suggest suitable remedial measures for employees who have reported pain or discomfort within the DSE assessment process.  The training will also include a short briefing on administration of the WorkRite online management system when dealing with issues raised.

Events Safety Management

This introductory one day course provides a background to the safety issues that should be taken into account when planning, organising and running an event. It includes venue evaluation, safe site design, risk assessment, emergency planning and contractor management.

Fire Warden

This 3 hour course will provide nominated fire wardens with an understanding of their roles and duties as a fire warden and will provide instruction on how to sweep the designated areas the event of a fire evacuation and how to deal with any disabled persons requiring evacuation.

First Aid at Work

Both the three day First Aid at Work, and one day Emergency First Aid at Work courses are run and accredited by the British Red Cross.  Participants are provided with first aid training in line with the minimum standards set-out by the Health & safety Executive.

First Aid training arrangements must be based on assessment of risk of work carried out in their Faculty/Directorate (including off-site activities such as fieldtrips). See Guidance on assessment of first aid needs. Further advice is available from the University Health & Safety Unit.

Courses are booked direct with the British Red Cross by your Faculty/Directorate. See Guidance on arrangements for first aid training.  The British Red Cross run first aid courses throughout the year at venues within reasonable distance from University sites.

Health & Safety Local Officer (HSLO)

This one day course provides nominated HSLOs with a basic understanding and awareness of key H&S issues and will enable them to undertake their H&S duties confidently and competently. The workshop focuses on a number of key areas including how to prevent ill health, accident and incidents, how to identify and assess hazards and risks and what individual and organisational legal responsibilities we have.

Managing Health & Safety

This two day course provides Health & Safety Managers (HSMs), Faculty Directors of Research/Enterprise, Heads of Department/Services and Principle Investigators/Supervisors with an introduction to their responsibilities for implementing the University's health and safety policy and how this relates to the health and safety of students and staff. The course covers 6 key areas including accident and incident awareness, risk assessment and measuring and improving performance.

Manual Handling Awareness

This half-day workshop is intended to provide participants with an understanding of what manual handling is and the key steps to ensure that manual handling activities are assessed and carried out appropriately. Participants will be taken through the key steps to correct manual handling as defined by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

Resuscitation & Use of Defibrillator

This two hour workshop provides training on resuscitation techniques and on how to correctly use an automated external defibrillator (AED) – the session will provide real life scenarios and attendees will be able to practice techniques on life-sized models. Emphasis will be given on the correct steps to follow in the event of a cardiac arrest.

Risk Assessment

This half-day course will provide participants with an understanding of the University of Greenwich risk assessment procedure and will familiarise them with the risk assessment form. Participants will gain an understanding of the different hazard types present in the university and will learn about the appropriate control measures which should be implemented to reduce the level of risk present within a particular work activity. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to undertake a risk assessment during the course.

Safety Statements

This two hour workshop is principally aimed at those who are primarily involved in drawing up their faculty/directorate Safety Statement but is open to all that have inputs into the process.

The session will cover best practice for completing the Safety Statement document and will analyse the requirements needed to meet all criteria.  Its importance within the H&S audit cycle will also be included.

Senior Leadership H&S Risk Management

This half-day workshop is provided Evershed's Principal Associate Solicitor-Advocate and Health & Safety Lead.  This inspiring speaker, hugely experienced in the education sector will provide delegates with the knowledge  needed for a senior leader to understand their responsibilities, look at the reasons behind H&S, the relevance of corporate governance to safety and the requirement for effective health and safety management, its principles and its strategic implementation.

Stress Awareness

This 30 minute online course shows you how to take positive steps to prevent stress; it looks at how to stay in control when the pressure is mounting and highlights the tell-tale signs to help you recognise problems before they become serious. It also provides strategies to put in place to prevent pressure getting out of control - suggesting ways to change daily routines and learned behaviours to allow a better and more productive working life.

Workplace Inspection

This two hour workshop discusses the importance of workplace inspections as a monitoring tool to help ensure that workplace hazards are controlled and that risk to employees and others are eliminated or minimised. The session will cover frequency of inspections, identifying hazards, recommendations for eliminating or minimising risk and assigning remedial actions.
