Laptop and Data Projector Loan

ICT offers a laptop and data projector loan service for staff.
1. Loan Laptops and Data Projectors
A number of laptops and data projectors are available for loan to University of Greenwich staff via the Library at each campus.
Laptops and projectors will be issued for one week with a one week renewal in person, or on-line via Talis.
There is no charge for this service, although sanctions will be imposed on late returns at a rate of £5.00 per day or part thereof.
Laptops and/or projectors must be returned to the Library by 12 noon on the agreed date; collection will be between 1pm and library closing times.
2. Using the Laptops and Data Projectors
The laptops come loaded with the following software:
2.1. Operating System
Microsoft Windows XP SP2
2.2. Software Installed on Laptops
| Microsoft Office 2003 | Adobe reader 7.0.0 |
| Microsoft Project 2003 | Java 1.5.0.11 |
| Microsoft Frontpage 2003 | Quicktime alternative 1.6 |
| Microsoft Office 2007 File Converters | Realtime Alternative 1.43 |
| Microsoft Internet explorer 6 SP2 | Shockwave 10 |
| Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.7 | Flash player 9 |
| Nero 6.6 |
They are setup ready to be used with the University’s wireless system; you will need to enter your University ID and Password before you can use this service.
Any files saved onto the laptops must be stored onto the D: drive and for your own data protection it is advisable to remove these before returning the laptop to the library, as they may be seen by the next user who loans the laptop.
To access the laptop, use the following credentials:
| Laptop Id = loan | Password = Greenwich |
To enable projection hold the FN key (situated in the left hand bottom corner of the laptop), press F8, and then select one of the following options:
LCD only = laptop viewable,
CRT only = projector viewable,
LCD + CRT = Laptop and Projector viewable simultaneously
Release the button when the appropriate view is selected.
3. Borrower Liability
The borrower assumes all responsibility for the laptop and/or data projector. Borrowers agree not to install software, alter system hardware or software configurations, or otherwise violate the University of Greenwich regulations relating to the use of IT equipment.
The borrower of this equipment must be aware that they are responsible for full replacement costs if the laptop and/or projector is/are lost or stolen.
Damaged equipment will be charged for up to the cost of a full replacement; the replacement equipment will be charged for at current market price.
It is the borrower’s responsibility to keep a copy of all data, as the University of Greenwich cannot accept liability for loss of data caused by hardware or battery failure, or for files left on the laptop’s hard drive once it is returned to the Library.
4. Security and Safety
Laptops and/or data projectors must never be left unattended at any time - to do so is to invite theft. Keep the laptop with you at all times when in a public place. When using the power adapter, make sure that the cables do not cause a hazard to yourself or others. Similar precautions should be taken with trailing mouse or network cables.
5. Maintenance
Laptops are automatically scanned for viruses and unauthorized files, but need to be kept updated regularly. This is achieved when the laptop is returned to the library - please allow any automatic system or anti-virus updates to proceed if you are informed of them during your use of the laptop.
Any problems with the hardware, software or configuration must be reported to the IT Helpdesk (See Section 7) and the equipment returned as soon as possible.
6. Tips for taking care of the laptop
Laptops are more fragile than desktops and require more care. The following recommendations on care and maintenance should be followed:
- Be careful not to bump or drop the laptop, do not carry items with it that could harm it and do not put any objects on top of it. The case, although strong, is not made to support extra weight.
- When transporting your computer always turn it off and put it in a carrying case.
- Try to avoid touching the screen.
- Avoid subjecting the laptop to extreme temperature changes. Components can become very brittle and easy to break in cold temperatures and can melt or warp in high temperatures. As a general rule, your computer is safest at temperatures that are comfortable for you.
- Keep all liquids away from your laptop. Almost any liquid spilt on the computer can result in extremely expensive repairs.
- Keep USB drives and your computer away from magnetic fields. Magnetic fields can erase data on both USB pens and hard drives.
- Avoid whenever possible turning off the Laptop when the hard disk is on as this could lead to data loss or corruption of the disk.
7. Assistance
