Professor Peter Kyberd has a degree in Science from Durham and a Masters and a PhD in engineering from Southampton University. During the 1990's he worked at the Oxford Orthopaedic Engineering Centre (part of Oxford University), where he was involved in a range of orthopaedic related projects. He created the first prosthetic limb to be controlled by a microprocessor which was worn in the field by a patient. He was also part of the team that created the first prosthetic arm that was controlled via a communications bus and has been worn by users in the field since the late nineties.

From 2000 Peter was a lecturer at Reading University, where he was part of a team that performed the first implant of a bi-directional nerve sensor on a healthy human being. In 2003 he took up a Canada Research Chair at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton.

In July 2015 he became the head of the Engineering Science Department at the University of Greenwich in the UK.

He was on the organising committee of the ISPO World Congress in Vancouver in 2007 and was the chair of the Myoelectric Controls (MEC) Symposia at the University of New Brunswick in 2005, 2008 and 2011. Peter has also played an integral part in the Canadian ISPO national members meetings 2011, 2013 and 2015.

He is the Chair of the Trent International Prosthetics Symposium (TIPS'16) held in Glasgow 28th - 30th September 2016. He is also on the committee for the International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics - ICORR'17 held in London, July 2017.

He is the chair of the next TIPS meeting in 2019 to be held in Salford Manchester in March 2019.

He will be presenting the Faculty of Engineering and Science Public Lecture for December: "From Hook to Skywalker - The Progress of bionic limbs".  Wardroom, Pembroke Building, Medway Campus, 6:30pm - 13th December 2017

Peter has worked in many aspects of engineering connected with orthopaedics.  Projects he has worked on include measuring the effect of Orthopaedic procedures on the patient population, from the loosening of artificial Hips and Knees to how people recover from a knee ligament rupture.

He has a significant interest in in the design, control and clinical application of computer intelligence to create advanced prosthetic arms.

He was the first to produce a microprocessor controlled prosthetic hand that was used by a patient in the field, and he was part of a European team that built the first prosthetic limb to be controlled via a local area network. This was also the first such device to be used in the field a version of it is still in use more than a decade later.  As part of this program he has also worked on methods to measure the function of prosthetic limbs.

He is part of an international team that is working towards the standardisation of the assessment of function of prosthetic arms.
