Tim Barry has recently joined the School of Engineering and is on secondment from the Business School where he successfully led one of the largest departments in the university for several years.

He is an accomplished lecturer with 18 years’ experience of teaching a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. In addition, Tim has designed and delivered numerous short courses in the public and corporate sectors, both in the UK and globally.

Early in 2006 Tim lead a multi-million pound project involving a partnership of two universities and an external organisation. During this period the project was taken from concept through to delivering a finished community campus which opened in September 2007. Following the successful project, Tim took on the role as Campus Director first year of operations before returning to the Business school the following academic year.

Tim’s previous experience includes a number of years in the manufacturing, engineering and construction industries. Tim obtained his MBA from the University of Kent and he holds a BSc Hons in Engineering and Management.

Department Head - responsibilities include recruitment and management of both full time staff and visiting lecturers. Producing forward plans and coordinating a team of senior staff to deliver the department's goals. Represent the department at university meetings, employers' liaison panel and events outside the university.

Teaching and administrative activities

In addition to a number of teaching commitments, Tim's academic responsibilities include monitoring & review of internal programmes and preparation of validation approvals. Quality assurance of programmes and courses offered by the department. This also includes liaison & coordination with associate colleges and international partners and conducting overseas visits to collaborative partners as part of the quality assurance system. Outside the Department - experience of chairing validation panels and Institutional approval events. External examiner duties for a number of universities, in the UK and overseas.

MPhil/PhD supervision

Due to Tim's current management position, time is not available to supervise doctorate students.

Several 'Knowledge Connect' consultancy projects with London based SMEs (Securing £40k between 2009-11) Consultancy work under the 'Manufacturing Industries Link' ' and Creative Industries Link' schemes.

Current research

Among many of Tim's research and consultancy interests are a number of local government and private contracts. This allows Tim to carry out applied and practical research that is relevant to industry and small businesses. Indeed, an extensive range of consultancy work has been undertaken with SMEs.

Recent collaborations with the business world have included several projects with the LDA and successfully bidding for two projects resulting in £60k of funding from Magnox PLC in 2009-10.
