The University of Greenwich has pledged cooperation with a Pakistani university on maritime research and teaching. The maritime industry is one of the biggest in the global economy. Greenwich Vice-Chancellor Baroness Blackstone signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Vice Admiral Farooq Rashid, Rector of Bahria University, last week to develop shared courses and research projects which will benefit both countries.

Hundreds attended the Academic Carol Service at the Old Royal Naval College Chapel this week (Tuesday 4 December). The University of Greenwich choir sang a range of enchanting Christmas songs and led the congregation in traditional carols. University chaplain Rev. Jules Gomes gave a lively sermon on the earthy realism of the Christmas story with its smelly stable and lowly shepherds. “You couldn’t make this up”, he said.

Nearly half our water supplies come from underground reservoirs, but these are increasingly contaminated with industrial waste that sinks through soil and rock. A particularly sticky problem is how to extract cleaning fluids used in dry-cleaning processes, for instance, or washing grease off engines. Called “chlorinated solvents”, they literally cling to soil particles in the water.

The University of Greenwich has appointed Professor Joanne Finkelstein, from Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia, to the post of Head of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences. In her new role, Joanne Finkelstein will be responsible for 85 staff and 2,500 undergraduate and postgraduate students. The school’s broad subject range includes law, journalism, drama, history and sociology. It has a developing research portfolio and a particular emphasis on working with creative and cultural industries in the region.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. To acknowledge this, the real story of slavery will be the topic of the next Pembroke Lecture, which takes place on Wednesday, October 24, at the University of Greenwich at Medway. Marika Sherwood, author and vice-chair of the Black and Asian Studies Association, will give the talk, which looks at the effectiveness of the Abolition and Emancipation acts.

Students from the University of Greenwich have been dispensing stress-testing cards as well as calming words of advice to the public to mark National Stress Awareness Day (Wednesday, November 7). As part of the International Stress Management Association UK’s (ISMA) awareness campaign called “Stress - Don’t Let It Get To You”, students offered shoppers in Eltham High Street a list of top 10 tips as well as the cards that detect levels of stress through body temperature.

Tony Mallet, Professor of Analytical Chemistry in the School of Science has become only the second person to be awarded a British Mass Spectrometry Society (BMSS) medal for life-time contribution to Mass Spectrometry. From 1980 to 2002 Tony was actively engaged in promoting the activities of the British Mass Spectrometry Society. He held the posts of Meetings Secretary, General Secretary, Vice-Chair, Chairman and finally Trustee.

The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, visited the University of Greenwich this morning to make his first major speech on education policy. He was joined on the Greenwich Campus by the Secretary of State for Children, Schools & Families, Ed Balls MP, at a special event hosted by Baroness Blackstone, Vice-Chancellor of the university. He outlined the government's plans to achieve a "world class" education system where young people from every background can prosper. After his lecture, the PM and the Secretary of State took questions from an invited audience of university staff, students and educationalists.

Students from the University of Greenwich at Medway had the chance to build bridges with the world of construction, as well as getting a chance to learn about the practical side of steel and concrete, when they attended a week-long Constructionarium. The event held at the National Construction College in Norfolk in association with leading UK building firms Byrne Brothers and design and engineering consultancy Atkins, saw 33 full and part-time BEng/BSc undergraduates from the university’s Civil Engineering degree attend. The University of Greenwich at Medway has made a significant green initiative by installing an electric car charging point at their campus at Chatham Maritime. The facility has the capacity to charge two electric cars simultaneously. Simon Earp, Transport & Greenwich Travel Manager explains: ”Charles May from the university’s School of Engineering, who wanted to use his electric car to commute into work, asked if it would be possible to install a charging point at the campus. I am pleased that the university has recognised the positive step he has taken and supported this form of green travel.”

Rear Admiral Roy Clare, Chief Executive of the Museums. Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) and former Director of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters (HonDLitt) by the University of Greenwich on Monday, October 22, 2007. At the museum, Roy Clare was credited with building new audiences and creating wider partnerships (including instigating the ‘Sea Britain 2005’ initiative to commemorate the bicentennial of Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar). He shaped the £16m project to modernise services and facilities at the Royal Observatory and oversaw a succession of successful exhibitions and programmes in the National Maritime Museum and Queens House

History Volunteers Celebrate Research Success

More than 50 Medway local history enthusiasts who have spent the past two years as volunteers contributing to the England’s Past for Everyone project will be gathering at the University of Greenwich at Medway, on Saturday, October 27. They will be celebrating the end of their successful work examining the villages, people and industries that flourished in the Lower Medway Valley from the mid 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. They will also be finding out more about a new research project into the history of the Medway towns.

The school was officially opened by the Chief Royal Engineer General Sir John Stibborn in October 1997. The School of Engineering has over 1000 students based at the Medway Campus. The Stephen Lawrence Gallery at the University of Greenwich kicks off a new season on Monday, October 29 with an exhibition which brings artists together with elderly people to look at ways of representing memory and experience. The exhibition, Making Memories Matter, displays a collection of memory boxes filled with photos and souvenirs, telling the stories of their creators: elderly people from Finland, Nigeria, Vietnam, India, China, Jamaica, Poland and the UK. The boxes, made from redundant ammunition cases, tell stories of immigration, evacuation and the experiences of the creators who lived through key events of the 20th century.

And now there is another opportunity to sign up for the ten-week, one evening a week, course. The next one, called Creative Commerce, starts on 9 October. “The course helped springboard my enterprise and gave me confidence to pursue it as a business as well as a creative venture,” says Julia Alvarez.
