Researchers uncover true cost of poor sewerage
Researchers at the University of Greenwich have shown that the lives of thousands of children could be saved if developing countries invest more in sewers. David Hall and Emanuele Lobina at the university’s Business School show that international donors and financial institutions have put too much emphasis on low-cost solutions like septic tanks and cesspits, and have put pressure on governments to make poor householders pay the cost of connection to sewerage systems.

Health & social care lecture open to all
Members of the public and healthcare professionals are invited to an inaugural professorial lecture at the University of Greenwich this Thursday evening. Professor Elizabeth West of the university’s School of Health & Social Care will examine how social science can contribute to the health and social care sector. She will emphasise the need to produce new empirical evidence and translate research into forms that can be practically applied.

Delhi launch of Centre for Indian Business
Indian students’ most popular UK university has launched its Centre for Indian Business in Delhi (November 27). The University of Greenwich, which has more students from India than any other UK university, has created a centre to help people and organisations do business in and with India.

University of Greenwich students’ grand designs triumph
Graduates from the University of Greenwich have scooped a string of architecture prizes, at home and abroad, in recognition of their innovative designs. At an awards ceremony at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) last week, Francesco Belfiore and Wynne Leung were named as winners of the top prize for new graduates in the President’s Medals Student Awards for their project Invisible University Library.

Cutty Sark and University of Greenwich win double prizes for computer modelling to save ship
Computer scientists at the University of Greenwich working with the Cutty Sark Trust have won the top prize at the London Knowledge Transfer Awards. Their pioneering partnership uses sophisticated computer models to determine how to dismantle and reassemble the fire-damaged ship, which will open again to the public in 2010.

Carol service at Old Royal Naval College open to all
The University of Greenwich and Trinity College of Music are holding a carol service on Friday, December 5, 2008 at 7pm. £100,000 gift from former Avery Hill Principal
Ninety-two year old Kathleen Jones has donated £100,000 to the University of Greenwich. Mrs Jones was principal of Avery Hill College in Eltham from 1960 until 1981. The college, which is now part of the university, specialised in teacher training and was based on the campus sites either side of Avery Hill Park.

Medway lecturer receives gymnastics recognition
More than a decade’s research into the physiology of elite-level gymnasts has earned University of Greenwich at Medway Principal Lecturer Dr Monèm Jemni a top award in recognition of his work. Dr Jemni, who is a Programme Leader in Sports Science at the university, which is based at Chatham Maritime, has for many years studied the physical attributes required to perform at the highest level of gymnastics and how the sport has evolved over the past 40 years.

University and Cutty Sark partnership shortlisted for prize
A pioneering partnership which is helping to save the Cutty Sark has been shortlisted for a prestigious prize in the London Development Agency’s London Knowledge Transfer Awards. Experts from the University of Greenwich are using sophisticated computer models to determine how to dismantle and reassemble the fire-damaged ship, which will open again to the public in 2010. The project has been chosen as one of three finalists for the Knowledge Base Collaboration Award, to be presented on Friday, December 5.

Camping on campus
Architecture students took up the challenge to build a basic dwelling for under £100 – and then prove the structures withstood the elements by sleeping in them overnight! The University of Greenwich students were told to make dwellings “achieving maximum comfort with the least resources” as one of their first assignments.

Putting more sweet potato on the table in Africa
Dr Richard Gibson, Plant Pathologist at the University of Greenwich at Medway's Natural Resources Institute, has been awarded a three year grant to improve the cultivation of sweet potato in sub-Saharan Africa. The grant from the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and the Department for International Development (DFID) aims to speed up the breeding of virus-resistant sweet potatoes. Sweet potato viruses cause damage to leaves and stunt growth, causing much reduced yields in sweet potatoes.

Students combat stress as part of national awareness event
The balancing act of study and work, as well as financial fears, were among the topics covered when students from the University of Greenwich held a special event for National Stress Awareness Day. As part of the International Stress Management Association UK’s (ISMA) awareness campaign called “Don’t Worry - Take Action”, students were dishing out advice at The Dome; the university’s brand new Avery Hill campus café, and gym, which is also open to the public.

Thomas Mulquin remembered in charity rugby match
The sixth annual Thomas Mulquin Memorial Cup, in memory of a student from the University of Greenwich who died at his first training session with the university’s rugby team, will be played on Friday 14 November. Thomas was a 20-year-old undergraduate in the second year of a computer science degree when he died of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, in 2002.

University lecture educates public on cancer
A free public lecture, dispelling the myths surrounding cancer and offering lifestyle advice on how to reduce the chances of acquiring the disease, has been held at the University of Greenwich at Medway. Expert and author Dr Lauren Pecorino, who is a Principal Lecturer at the university teaching cancer biology, gave the talk on the disease - which affects one in three people - to an audience of more than 100 people.

University of Greenwich at Medway hosts 'Monster' Halloween Ball
The University of Greenwich at Medway and Invicta FM teamed up to put on a ‘monster’ of a Halloween Ball last Friday, October 31. The event was headlined by Welsh rock band The Automatic, best known for their UK Number One single, Monster. Hundreds of students, from the Universities at Medway and University of Greenwich students from the Avery Hill campus packed the Pilkington Building venue, along with ticket winners from Invicta FM.

Students swap lecture theatre for construction site
Civil engineering students from the University of Greenwich at Medway have swapped the lecture theatre for a construction site to get some hands-on learning with leading industry experts. Final-year undergraduates took part in the week-long residential project at Constructionarium, based at the National Construction Centre in Norfolk, where they experienced the hours, conditions and challenges of a working construction site.

Minister launches regional training centre to help manufacturing sector stay competitive
The Minister for the South East, Jonathan Shaw MP, has opened the Renishaw Centre for Manufacturing Productivity at the University of Greenwich at Medway. The centre, a partnership between the university and engineering manufacturer Renishaw, will offer courses to businesses and develop teaching and research on manufacturing productivity, as well as giving local firms access to the latest technology.

CO2 scientists win prestigious education prize
University of Greenwich researchers behind an invention that captures CO2 have won the Times Higher Education Award for their “Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology”. Dr Colin Hills and Dr Paula Carey from the Medway-based School of Science were told their innovation “could drastically reduce the impact of climate change” at a glittering ceremony at a Park Lane hotel last night.

Covering Conflict display among highlights of new gallery season
Dramatic images from some of the world’s top photojournalists come to the University of Greenwich next month, as part of the new season at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery. Covering Conflict, a touring exhibition of images from the Magnum Photos agency in association with the BBC World Service, looks at the history and process of representing and reporting war.

Pembroke Lecture focuses on work of War Graves Commission
The important work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, which helps remember those who have lost their lives in military conflict, will be the subject of the next Pembroke Lecture to be held at the University of Greenwich at Medway on November 12. Established by Royal Charter in 1917, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission pays tribute to the 1,700,000 men and women of the Commonwealth forces who have died in various conflicts around the world. It is a non-profit-making organisation that was founded by Sir Fabian Ware.

New university gym open to public at Avery Hill
The University of Greenwich is opening its brand new gym to the public at special community rates. Residents can have access to the state-of-the-art facilities for just £200 a year – the equivalent of £16.67p a month – a lot less than private clubs. The gym shares a space with a newly refurbished café where members can get Costa coffee or enjoy a healthy snack.

New report highlights 'poor choices' available to Britain's low income consumers
Consumer champion energywatch has published research led by the University of Greenwich, which reveals how low income households are failed, not only in the energy market but across seven essential services. The research, led by Professor Steve Thomas of the university’s Public Services International Research Unit and drawing on other sectoral experts, examines the food, housing, water, telecommunications, public transport, financial services as well as the energy sector.

CO2 scientists short-listed for prestigious education prize
University of Greenwich scientists behind an invention that captures CO2 have been short-listed for the Times Higher Education Awards, the sector’s most prestigious prize. Dr Colin Hills and Dr Paula Carey have developed a technology which converts contaminated land and industrial waste into harmless pebbles – capturing large amounts of carbon dioxide at the same time.

Greenwich alumnus makes debut as Gardeners’ World presenter
University of Greenwich graduate Toby Buckland takes over as the new main presenter of the UK’s longest-running gardening programme this Friday evening. Toby qualified in landscape management, taught at one of the university’s partner institutions, Hadlow College in Kent. He was named as BBC Two’s Gardeners’ World presenter earlier this summer.

University of Greenwich opens doors of Wren gem to celebrate architecture festival
The University of Greenwich is throwing open the doors of its Greenwich Campus on Sunday, September 21 as part of the capital-wide architecture festival, London Open House.
