Collage exhibition in the Stephen Lawrence Gallery

26th Jan 2010 - 26th Feb 2010

An exhibition about collage featuring works by over 40 artists

Collage in early 20th century art marked an immense alteration in visual experience, empowering tactics that play at de-skilling while also invoking intimacy.

The Modernists used collage with dramatic juxtaposition, while contemporary works favour an intricate and implosive thinking. This exhibition conveys collage as a “transferable and mutable apparatus of subtractive plasticity,” something that is a combination of both approaches.

The theme of the exhibition offers a broad selection of current collage-related activity. Most of the works shown are on paper but text and video pieces are also exhibited.

Opening Tuesday January 26th, 6-8pm.

To Spray, or not to Spray: That is the Question- Horticultural Entomology in the 21st Century

11th Feb 2010 6:00pm

Inaugural Professorial Lecture by Visiting Professor Jerry Cross held at the Pilkington Lecture Theatre

Professor Jerry Cross

Jerry Cross is leader of the Entomology and Plant Pathology Science Team at East Malling Research, where he leads research projects on integrated pest management and spray application to fruit crops. He is at the forefront of developing non-pesticidal methods for management of pests of UK fruit crops and incorporating them into integrated pest and disease management programmes, with a focus on minimising the occurrence of pesticide residues.

An important driving force has been finding new solutions to pest problems faced by UK fruit growers. In 2007, he was awarded a professorship for his contribution in this field and for his close collaboration with the Chemical
Ecology Group at the Natural Resources Institute on identifying sex pheromones and other semiochemicals of UK fruit pests and developing methods of exploiting them for monitoring and control. Another important area of research is optimising sprayer use according to orchard structure, taking account of the distribution of spray deposits and their biological efficacy.

The lecture is followed by refreshments and a buffet. During this time, Professor Jerry Cross will be available to discuss his work.

University of Greenwich at Medway, Central Avenue, Chatham Maritime, Kent ME4 4TB
Tea and coffee are served in room 011, Pilkington Building, at 5.30pm.

The University of Greenwich Big Band Swing for Stella

14th Feb 2010 3:00pm

A fundraising big band concert for a child with Neuroblastoma

Stella's Story

At just 17 months, Stella was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer known as Neuroblastoma MYC-N amplified (high risk), originating from her adrenal gland. The treatment is harsh, but it needs to be; neuroblastoma, a very aggressive cancer that affects children, is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the under fives. Despite responding to initial treatment, Stella has a low chance of survival unless she can obtain a revolutionary antibody treatment which will prevent the all too common relapse from happening.

Hope with you help

There is hope, however, and with your help Stella’s chances of survival could increase significantly. The antibody therapy, available in the USA, costs a massive £250,000 upwards, but if everyone gives just a little it could add up to a lot! We can get her there!

Swing for Stella

The Greenwich University Big Band has played for many good causes over its 24-year history, but this cause is particularly poignant. Stella and her family are friends of the band organiser’s family. Just turned two-years-old, Stella loves music and dancing, so this concert is for her. It is one of a number of events in the campaign to raise money for Stella. For more information, please see:

Tickets are FREE, but there will be a leaving collection for Stella’s Appeal. Tickets are available on a first-come first-served basis – and limited by seating in the lecture theatre – so reserve your ticket now by email: bigband@gre.ac.uk

or phone band manager, Fred Parrett on 020 8460 2116.

When water does not boil at boiling point

Presented by Professor Hasok Chang

We all learn at school that pure water always boils at 100°C under normal atmospheric pressure. But this is a myth, like a surprising number of things that are taken as common knowledge.

In this lecture Professor Chang, who is engaged in research in the history and philosophy of physical sciences as well as general philosophy of science, will decipher the myth.
