Life of pioneering black writer explored at University of Greenwich

The life of Nancy Prince, a 19th century free black American adventurer, missionary and writer, is the subject of a public lecture at the University of Greenwich.

The history research talk, ‘Nancy Prince: A Black Woman’s Odyssey’ will be given by Dr Beverley Duguid of the University of London, from 5pm to 7pm on Monday, March 1 on the Greenwich Campus: Room 139, Queen Anne Court, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich SE10 9LS.

Nancy Prince was brought up in Massachusetts, spent time in Russia as the wife of one of the Tsar’s guards and later, as a widow, travelled alone to Jamaica where she worked as a missionary, philanthropist and educator.

Mrs Prince’s extensive travel writing offers the chance to hear the voice of an African-American woman whose life transcended stereotypical notions of black women in the 19th century.

New Exhibition opening in the Stephen Lawrence gallery

The exhibition explores the urban regeneration that took place in Berlin following re-unification. This regeneration whilst failing to create the commercial and political space intended, led to a burgeoning creative scene particularly in the area directly traversed and laid to waste by the Berlin Wall. This alternative, creative scene has been without precedent in post-war Europe.

The exhibition touches on issues of urban regeneration which are relevant to the experience of preparing for the Olympics in East London. It also highlights the complex relationship between creative sectors and developers in the changing demographic profile of our cities.

Business people are invited to attend a Selling to the Ministry of Defence workshop, organised by the Business Innovation Group (BIG). The workshop is designed to help businesses explore opportunities in defence industries and related sectors.

A panel of expert speakers will include Phillip Margerison, of the Ministry of Defence, Anne Norman, of the Centre for Defence Enterprise, Harry McKernon, of UK Defence Standardization (DSTAN) as well as Dr Steve Woodhead and Dr Linda Hyder from the University of Greenwich . They will outline opportunities with the Ministry of Defence and other defence organisations as well as talking about public sector funding and the advantages of collaborative projects.

Businesses that have won defence projects will also be on hand to network and describe their experiences.

When water does not boil at boiling point

We all learn at school that pure water always boils at 100°C under normal atmospheric pressure. But this is a myth, like a surprising number of things that are taken as common knowledge.

In this lecture Professor Chang, who is engaged in research in the history and philosophy of physical sciences as well as general philosophy of science, will decipher the myth.

The Shifting Sands of Employment Relations: 20 Years of Research

Professor Susan Corby will present her Inaugural Professorial Lecture "The Shifting Sands of Employment Relations: 20 Years of Research," at the University of Greenwich on Thursday, 25 March at 6pm.

The lecture traces the shifts in employment relations over 20 years, and how Professor Corby’s research has mirrored these shifts, as the emphasis changed to dealing with management and public service unions, the perspectives of female and minority workers, and statutory rights.

Professor Corby is Professor of Employment Relations in the university’s Business School, which she joined in 1998 from Manchester Metropolitan University. Before that she was a senior trade union official in two public sector unions. Professor Corby currently serves on the Central Arbitration Committee and the Employment Appeal Tribunal, is an independent expert under the equal value legislation, and an Acas arbitrator.
