A league table in the Evening Standard of the Student Satisfaction Survey placed Greenwich joint 6th in London equal to King’s College and above the London School of Economics.

According to the Hastings & St.Leonards Observer and Eastbourne Gazette Maurice Rumbold, a member of Greenwich’s employers advisory forum, has been appointed as a non-executive of East Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust.

The News Shopper reported that learning assistants from schools across Bromley have completed a Greenwich affiliated visual impairment training course.

According to Isle of Man Examiner the new manager of the Isle of Man Education’s Career Guidance Service, Andrew McKinley, worked for four years as Roman Catholic Chaplain at Greenwich.

Clearing

Greenwich Mercury had a large article about Clearing with the title The uni lifeline with photos of student Christine Downes and Head of Recruitment, Bev Woodhams.

Greenwich is gearing up for Clearing according to Kent on Sunday. Bev Woodhams also gave advice in the same piece.

The Wharf reported that Greenwich is holding three open days in the weeks following A-level results. A second article looked at the advice that was available at Greenwich through Clearing.

The article about the Medway Graduation ceremonies in Medway Messenger and Kent Messenger gave the contact details for the Clearing hotline.

The French nuclear industry has been plagued by cost-overruns, equipment failures and reIatively low levels of reliability according to Stephen Thomas, Professor of Energy Policy on Inter Press Service News Agency website. He also argued that the industry gets massive subsidies from the French government.

According to Police Life Scotland a 2009 study at Greenwich found a highly significant increase in life satisfaction among people who attend pre-retirement courses.

Bexley Times, Epping Forest Guardian and Waltham Forest Guardian reported that Ike Ezekwugo, a member of Britain’s Got Talent winners Diversity, graduated from Greenwich with a degree in Human Resource Management. He was joined after the ceremony by seven other members of Diversity at the campus.

Events Management graduate Lisa Barton has been appointed as Travel Administration Assistant at Interlace Global Group according to Inpharm.com website.

In AJ Specification Professor Stephen Thomas said that there was very little that architects can do in their design of new nuclear power plants as they are built of a set design.

Fire Risk Management said that the European Commission is funding a three year research project to examine the impact of cultural and ethnic influences on human behaviour in emergencies. Greenwich is the lead partner in the study.

Humanities & Social Sciences

Senior Lecturer, Chrisoulla Pawlowska, had an article published in Solicitors Journal titled A connection too far – The tendency by some courts to read a fairness requirement in the Lister ‘close connection with employment’ test is going too far’.

The late writer Siobhan Dowd had an MA in Gender & Ethnic according to the Irish Post.

General campus news

Docklands publicised the Eagle Document exhibition in the Stephen Lawrence Gallery.

A profile of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance in the Independent said that Greenwich share the Old Royal Naval College site with them and validate some of their degrees.

An article in Asian Trader about Greenwich Post Office, which is the current holder of the Asian Trader Post Office Excellence Award, said that their diverse custom, ‘includes many student customers from Greenwich University, who buy a lot of stationery’.

According to Times Higher Education Dr Josh Davis gave festival patrons the opportunity to experience science entertainment when he visited the Secret Garden Party in Cambridgeshire.

Zoe Woodard from Minster College will be studying nursing at the Medway campus according to the East Kent Gazette, Sheerness Times and Sheppey Gazette.

School of Engineering

Your Medway, Your Swale, Medway Messenger and Kent Messenger reported that Terry Smith, a member of Britain’s Got Talent winners Diversity, graduated from Greenwich with a Masters degree in Information & Communications Technology at Rochester Cathedral.

Kent Business reported that Greenwich has an industry-funded chair of Manufacturing Engineering in a fact file about manufacturing.

Dr Amir Alani has began work as the first Rochester Bridge Warden’s Professor according to the Medway Messenger.

School of Science

Hexham Courant reported that William Lee, Greenwich graduate and Football Development co-ordinator for Charlton Athletic Football got married in Westgate-on-Sea in Kent .

Kent Online and Medway Messenger reported that the school had appointed nine specialist science research staff.

According to Kent Messenger Geoff Wiles 65 who ran a cycle shop in Medway is now studying Sports Science. His story was also featured in the Kent & Sussex Courier and on the ThisisKent  website.

Natural Resources Institute

Fruit Grower and Horticulture Week reported that during a visit to East Malling Research by Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for DEFRA, he was shown how NRI and EMR had cracked the sex pheromone code of the European Tarnished Plant bug and safeguard strawberry plants.

Ghanaweb website said that NRI had submitted their final report on the establishment of a Communities Exchange.

Nigerian based Guardian website reported that NRI was working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to improve the cultivation and processing of Cassava in Nigeria.

Medway Messenger publicised the Pembroke lecture by Professor Alan Cork titled, In the Farmer’s Shadow: Bio-Rational Pest Management for international development.

The spin-out company from the university has raised more than £650,000 in new investment according to Kent on Sunday. Professor Ray Coker from NRI came up with the Toximet T System which enables food producers to perform quality tests without the expense of using a laboratory.

Medway School of Pharmacy

The BBC website reported that ‘Topping the overall satisfaction [in the National Student Satisfaction Survey] table was Medway School of Pharmacy, on 97 per cent, The school scored 97 per cent in the NSSS according to the Daily Mail. According to Times Higher Education ‘Medway School of Pharmacy came top, with 97 per cent of its students satisfied with their education overall’. Medway Messenger reported that ‘The Medway School of Pharmacy, a joint venture between the University of Kent at Medway and the University of Greenwich at Medway, has topped the National Student Survey in 2009’. According to Kent on Saturday the school received ‘an almost perfect score of 97 per cent’. Pharmaceutical Journal reported that students ‘said they were satisfied or very satisfied with their education – the highest performance overall for any higher education institution’.
