Baroness Blackstone explained ‘why Britain and India can work wonders together’ in Higher Education in the Education Guardian.

In the Hindustan Times Tessa Blackstone looked at education trends in India including courses in demand and Greenwich initiatives in the country.

The Times, Medway Messenger, Medway Extra and Docklands reported on the university’s receipt of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize at Buckingham Palace. The Times Queen’s Anniversary Prize had two large photos relating to the award winning Tabeisa project.

According to Hansard (February 5) the number of entrants at Greenwich from state schools (2005/6) was 97.2% against a benchmark of 94.4%.

According to the News Shopper and Bexley Extra Harry Persaud, a Bexley councillor, has funded a scholarship at Greenwich to give financial help to international student.

Kent Director reported on the launch of the University Centre Folkestone.

Kent on Sunday reported on the foundation degree in contact-centre management to be taught at Folkestone in conjunction with Saga.

Tim Barry, Project Development Manager at the University Centre Folkestone (UCF), looked at the launch of the UCF and the link up with SAGA in Greenwich regular in Kent Profile.

Jonathan Chandler, Head of Accommodation Services, was quoted as saying that that around 50% of Greenwich students live at home in an article about investing in student housing in Property Investor News.

The Bexley Times reported that the university opened all its campuses for an Open Day in the middle of the month.

According to Australian based Age.com website British Prime Minister Gordon Brown set a high standard in a speech at the University of Greenwich in October last year.

A report in the Observer on proposals for a wind farm in Lewis inaccurately attributed a study about the environmental impact to Greenwich. The study was in fact carried out by an academic at the University of East London. The story also appeared in Building magazine.

In Meetings & Incentive Travel Howard Evans, visiting lecturer on the Events Management course, refuted criticisms of events management degrees by Trevor Foley of the Events Industry Alliance.

Greenwich Time (the Council newspaper) reported on events management students organising a Fresh Blood talent show to raise the awareness of the National Blood Service.

Events management students are organising a charity rock music show to raise funds to help conserve the Cutty Sark according to the Wharf, Docklands, Greenwich Mercury and  News Shopper.

According to Conference & Incentive Travel Greenwich was the 5th highest event management course in a survey of agencies asked to name the top UK providers.

The Guide reported on past performances of Life & Death, a collection of poetry by Deaf children from Greenwich, in the Stephen Lawrence Gallery.

According to the Brighouse Echo a correspondent had ‘witnessed a marvellous show of early spring colour in the grounds of the University of Greenwich and the Old Royal Naval College’.

The News Shopper reported that the campus hosted the Friends of Greenwich Park Annual lecture which was given by Roman Detective author Lindsey Davis.

According to Docklands there were plenty of Greenwich students in the Admiral Hardy when a reporter visited to write his pub review.

The London Paper and Docklands gave advance publicity to the Borders and Identities exhibitions this month and next in the Stephen Lawrence Gallery.

The University of Greenwich Choir are performing Handel’s Messiah in the Old Royal Naval College Chapel according to the Docklands paper.

Architecture & Construction

Architects’ Journal, Building Design, Kentish Saturday Observer, Kent on Sunday and Times Higher Education reported on the appointment of Steve Tompkins, one half of the Stirling Prize shortlisted Haworth Tompkins as Visiting Professor.

An article by lecturer Marko Jobst in Architects’ Journal discussed the ‘spacial storytelling’ of film director Wim Wenders, who is the subject of a retrospective at the BFI Southbank.

Professor Alan Powers has been awarded an honorary fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) according to Docklands, Greenwich Mercury and the News Shopper.

Education & Training

Patrick Ainley, Professor of Training & Education, looked at why ‘We keep blaming ourselves for achieving the impossible with widening participation’ in an article in the Times Higher Education.

Health & Social Care

Gillian Thornton, a Harrogate based skin specialist, is to be awarded the first aesthetic medicine skin scholarship by the Royal College of Nursing according to the Yorkshire Post and Northern Echo. She will be studying for the new Graduate Diploma in Aesthetic Medicine at Greenwich.

According to the Hampshire Chronicle News Professor Pam Maras, President of the British Psychological Society, gave a public lecture to the Wessex branch of the society.

Medway 

School of Engineering

According to Kent on Sunday and Kentish Saturday Observer soldiers from the Royal School of Military Engineering (RSME) are to study for University of Greenwich qualifications, thanks to a new training agreement. The School of Engineering and the School of Architecture & Construction will be taking part in the project.

In Cargo Systems Professor Mike Bradley pointed out that in a US survey 60% of all solids handling plants failed to perform to expectations.

Solids & Bulk Handling reported that proposed changes in the way research in higher education institutions will be assessed could threaten the funding of valuable research at the Wolfson Centre.

According to Plant Engineer ‘If bulk solids are your problem and you can’t find a commercial solution’ then the Wolfson Centre has been solving such problems since 1973.

School of Science

The success of the Analytical Services Laboratory in receiving ISO standard was reported on by the Kentish Saturday Observer, Kent on Sunday, Medway Messenger, Kent Online and KM Extra.

According to the Medway News in an article about the Greenwich Spires publication produced by Universities UK, Professor Colin Hills is trying to make the leap from theory into reality with his Carbon8 system, a method for turning construction waste and carbon dioxide into small pellets that can be re-used as building aggregate.

The Medway News reported that Carbon8, a Greenwich spin-out company, could win a bursary from Shell to help its business.

Steve Leharne has been given an Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) grant to help solve the problem of underground water pollution according to the  Environment Times website.

The Drill Hall Library and Pilkington Building were joint winners of the Building Renovation category at the Kent Design Awards according to Kent Business.

Natural Resources Institute

The Guardian reported on the award of a large grant for Armyworm research to a consortium including the Natural Resources Institute by the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

Medway Messenger and Medway News reported that Greenwich was holding a Fairtrade event organised by Claire Coote and some of her students.

Medway School of Pharmacy

The launch of the Medway School of Pharmacy Students Association was reported on by the Medway Messenger.

According to the Medway Messenger, Kent Online and KM Extra student Alison Coll undertook a three month placement at the Federal University of Brazil.

The Medway Messenger, Kent Online and KM Extra reported on the latest Open Day at the campus.

Free rent for a year at the Enterprise Hub at Greenwich was one of the prizes listed for the Kent Innovation Challenge by Kent Business, Dartford Messenger and its Start Up supplement.

Medway Messenger reported that the campus was hosting a public meeting about the World Heritage bid for Chatham Historic Dockyard.

The Medway Messenger gave advance publicity to the Open Day at the campus in the middle of the month.
