In a Guardian Education article about ‘employer led’ courses Tessa Blackstone said that, “We shouldn’t assume that there is a fantastic and as yet unmet demand for the training of employees that are working already, especially not for whole degree programmes.” Instead, she argues, employers want “bite-sized chunks” of university courses.

According to the Medway News Greenwich is one of the institutions to develop a South East England Development Agency funded Leadership Academy for the south-east of England.

The Sun reported that Newcastle United footballer Celestine Babayaro played in the game against Liverpool despite the death of his brother Kennedy who had with two of his other brothers studied at Greenwich. The story also appeared in the European edition of the International Herald Tribune.

The launch of the new course with Canterbury Christ Church University to train speech and language therapists was reported on by Caring UK.

Loretta Bellman, Senior Research Fellow, commented in the Nursing Times on the question ‘Would you be prepared to perform a day’s free work to help your trust balance its books (as suggested recently by Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust). She said ‘What planet are these managers on? They must be told that most nurses have already given far more than one day’s free service to the NHS and are such good value for money.’

In the Architects’ Journal Robert Holden reviewed an exhibition titled Public City which is being held at the Building Centre in London.

Humanities

The Woolwich Drama Festival featuring performances by Humanities students was given advance publicity by the Greenwich Mercury (twice including a full page with photos), Lewisham & Catford News Shopper and Greenwich Time.

The Belfast Telegraph profiled Cherry Smyth lectures in poetry before the release of her collection of poetry and reading of her work in Belfast.

In the Brentwood Gazette Professor of Romani Studies, Thomas Acton, said that he hoped councils would allow travellers to settle and make land available for them to do so.

The Court Circular sections of the Daily Telegraph and the Times said that the Princess Royal attended the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport workshop held in the Business School. The visit during which she met Greenwich students was also reported on by the Greenwich Mercury and the Lewisham & Catford News Shopper.

According to the Yahoo Finance website Neurobiological Technologies Inc has appointed William A. Fletcher to their Board of Directors. Mr Fletcher graduated in International Marketing from Woolwich Polytechnic in 1969. NTI is a biotechnology company focused on therapies for neurological conditions including strokes and brain cancer.

Professor Ed Galea gave advice on how to survive a plane crash in the Sunday Times.

According to an article about working in the information technology industry the Mail on Sunday Greenwich IT graduate Nilam Bhudia now has ‘a demanding post at a major City investment bank’.

Kent Business had a large article with photos on the continuing involvement of Greenwich with the renovation of the Cutty Sark. Chris Bailey and Stoyan Stoyanov developed software to predict how the wood and metal components would behave during renovation. The story also appeared in Nautical magazine.

Tony Valsamidis, Senior Lecturer in Information Systems, reviewed a book called Genesis Machines: The new science of Biocomputing in the Times Higher Education Supplement.

Multimedia student Alex Simpson is organising a Pen Twiddling World Championship according to the Metro newspaper.

Education & Training

Professor Ian McNay had a letter published in the Guardian about the selection process at Oxford.

General campus news

The Guardian publicised the Brian Hand exhibition titled A Decision to Love at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery.

The Asian Voice referred to the Old Royal Naval College as ‘now part of University of Greenwich’ in an article about Sir Christopher Wren.

Medway

School of Engineering

The inaugural lecture by Professor Chun-Qing Li, the Atkins Professor of Civil Engineering, was publicised by the Medway Messenger (twice) and the Medway News.

Kent Profile, South East Business, Building Services Journal and Wet News publicised the new courses in Public Health Engineering.

South East Business publicised the rapid prototyping service that is available at the university.

The Information Technology Management for Business degree was praised in a Universities UK publication citing it as a good example of courses meeting the needs of business, according to the Kent Business.

South East Business reported that Dr James Gao is the new Medway Chair of Manufacturing Engineering.

Stuart Ashenden welcomed an Universities UK report that said that university leavers earn up £160,000 in their life according to Kent on Sunday.

According to Medway Messenger Engineering courses at the school have won endorsement from the Institute of Engineering & Technology.

School of Science

Kent Profile and Kent Director reported on the award of the Green Technology Award at the Kent Business Wards for Carbon8 Systems, a spin-out company from Greenwich.

Steve Rowntree who graduated from Greenwich in 1988 with a BSc in Applied Chemistry has joined the Oliver Wight Group as a consultant. He previously worked for Abbott in a variety senior management positions, both in the US and Europe.

General campus news

Professor Alan Reed focused on developments at the Medway campus since Greenwich took over NRI in his regular column in Kent Profile.

The Medway Messenger reported on the campus Open Day including two photos of the event.

The Medway campus is being considered for the Silver Jubilee Cup, the highest award for planning in the UK, according to Planning magazine, the Medway Messenger and KM Extra.

Property Investor News mentioned that the expanding Universities at Medway allowed plenty of scope for providing student accommodation.

The Medway News reported that a student newspaper had been launched at the campus.

Students in the new Pilkington building are enjoying the latest in sight and sound equipment during their lectures according to the Your County website.
