Docklands reported that Paddy Osborn, who lectures on financial trading techniques, said that the volatility of the markets is great news for the financial betting websites. He added that he expcted the current turmoil to continue for some time.

Computing & Mathematical Sciences

Shahzad Qadir who has an MSc in Mobile Computing & Communications and is now working for Morgan Stanley praised his course in the Times. He has enrolled for a new course and also sets up software laboratory demonstrations.

Humanities

Dimitrios Sinaniotis, Law Lecturer, looked at the whether Microsoft’s latest set-back in the courts will be good for competition in the New Law Journal.

According to the Sheerness Times Guardian Aaron Slight, Law & History student, was a former member of local rock band LHD (Love Honour Disobey).

The News Shopper had an article and photo about the Making Memories Matter exhibition in the Stephen Lawrence Gallery. Greenwich Time (Greenwich Council newspaper) also publicised the exhibition.

The Bexley Times reported that the Opportunity Knocks careers fair was being held at the Greenwich campus.

Avery Hill

Architecture & Construction

Stephen Davies, Occupational Safety, Health & Environment graduate, has been appointed health & safety officer for the Wolverhampton Express & Star according to the Safety & Health Practitioner.

According to the Bracknell News and Reading Chronicle Gerry Overton, Estate Management graduate has been appointed Asset Manager at property fund manager Highcross.

The Eurogates website (Netherlands Educational Portal) reported on the Saxion Universities course which provides an MSc in Real Estate Management awarded by Greenwich.

According to the Kentish Express Landscape Management graduate Debbie Adams has joined the Kentish Stour Countryside Project as Countryside Officer.

Education & Training

Patrick Ainley had a letter published in the Guardian contrasting plans by University College London to sponsor a non-selective mixed academy and their specially selective super academic pre-U tests for medicine and law.

Caroline Garner, PGCE English student, commented on the difficulties of marking in the Times Educational Supplement.

Patrick Ainley had an article published in the Times Higher Education Supplement arguing that ‘no matter the market, all universities must remain committed to producing knowledge’.

Rebecca White, Primary Education student, was one of five finalists chosen in the Supermodel School competition run by the Romford Recorder and Mall Shopping Centre in Romford.

Health & Social Care

Students from the school gave a list of top 10 tips to beat stress to shoppers in Eltham High Street as part of National Stress Awareness Day according the News Shopper.

The Independent reported on the new graduate diploma in aesthetic practice in reply to a nurse considering a change in career.

Medway

School of Engineering

Charles May who drives an electric car to work was interviewed on KMFM Radio about the installation on an electric charging point at the campus. The story also appeared in the Medway News.

The Kentish Saturday Observer had a large article and photo about research by Alec Coutroubis showing that Kent had enough sun to make solar power practical for home use. The story also appeared in the News Shopper, Medway News and Medway Messenger and KM Extra.

Engineering students recreated a smaller version of the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield while attending the Constructionarium event sponsored by Byrne Brothers and Atkins according to Further Education Today, News Shopper, Your Medway, Kentish Saturday Observer and Kent on Sunday.

According to Plumbing and Heating Engineering Greenwich is working with the Society of Public Health Engineers to develop a degree in Public Health Engineering Technology.

Natural Resources Institute

According to the KM Extra, Kent Online and Kent Director Professor John Morton contributed to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which has just been jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was one of the 450 lead authors of their fourth report.

The Gloucestershire Echo and Gloucestershire Citizen reported on the nomination of Steve Torr’s tsetse research for the Times Higher Educational Supplement Research Project of the Year.

General campus news

A new short course centre has opened at the campus according to South East Business, Kent Online and KM Extra.

Cleaning at the campus has been short listed as a finalist for the Best Cleaned Educational Establishment organised by Kimberley Clark according to the Medway Messenger, KM Extra and Cleaning & Maintenance.

Medway Messenger and the Medway News had a large article about the history of the Lower Medway Valley project led by Dr Andrew Hann.

Property Week cited the increase in student numbers in Medway as one of the driving factors behind regeneration which is now seeing a rapid expansion in hotels in the area.

According to the Medway Messenger Greenwich is building accommodation for a further 140 students at the campus.

Medway Matters (Council newsletter) reported that the Medway Innovation Centre on Rochester Industrial Estate, which is a joint venture with BAe Systems, Royal Bank of Scotland, Medway Council and the University of Kent, is enjoying great success.

Building Engineer reported that the Universities at Medway campus was highly commended at the Inaugural Regeneration and Renewals awards.

Greenwich was one of the organisations supporting a project to celebrate the Isle of Sheppey’s link with aviation according to the East Kent Gazette and Faversham Times.

According to Inquire (the University of Kent student magazine) students at Greenwich receive a higher maintenance loan because the level is based on the postcode of the institution not the location of the ‘accommodation.’
