The Indian based Statesman, Bangalore edition of the Hindu, the Kolkata edition of the Hindustan Times, the Economic Times in Mumbai, Economic Times in Kolkata and Telegraph India online reported on the agreement with Training and Advanced Studies in Management And Communication ltd (TASMAC) to provide MSc degrees in computing, computer systems & networking and enterprise software engineering Greenwich in India.

The Nursing Standard reported on the launch of the new Primary Care assistant practitioner foundation degree.

According to the East Kent Mercury Greenwich is looking for eight to ten people from Eythorne for research into health inequalities.

Urban regeneration company 1st East and the University of Greenwich ‘School of Urbanism’ gave Lowestoft students the opportunity to have their say on how the town may grow in the future according to the Lowestoft Journal.

Education & Training

An article on the front page of the Times Education Supplement examined research from the Nuffield Review of 14-19 Education & Training of which Geoff Stanton, Visiting Research Fellow, was the co-author. The report concluded that the lowest socio-economic groups are most likely to continue studying post-16 where there is a system of FE and sixth form colleges. It was also the subject of the Editors comment. The story also featured in the Morning Star.

In the Guardian letter column Patrick Ainley was critical of city technology courses and ‘the corruption endemic to this new mixed economy in the new market-state.’

Maritime Greenwich

Humanities

Sharon Norris looked at the composition of the Man Booker Prize judging panel in an article in the Times Higher Education Supplement arguing that they were not representative of ‘ordinary’.

Craig Morris, lecturer and programme leader was the winner of the First Impressions competition in the Times Higher Education Supplement by identifying Sugar Street by Naguib Mafouz from it’s opening line.

The New Statesman listed the History, Philosophy & Politics degree at Greenwich among the political science degrees available.

Business

According to the Dartford Messenger Rosemarie Warren, a student from North West Kent College, won a £150 prize from Greenwich as the highest achiever among students from four Kent colleges as part of her HND in business studies.

Mortgage Finance Gazette had a large article by John Smullen from the Business School and Fiancial Services advisers Capco on research they had done on why house prices behave as they do and why investors invest in them. They conclude that housing appears to be the least risky investment.

Computing & Mathematical Sciences

Professor Ed Galea explained the likelihood of plane crashes and passenger survival in the Radio Times, BBC Focus, Sun, andBrazilian based Correio Braziliense newspaper.

Education & Training

An opinion piece in the Times Higher Education Supplement by Professor Ian McNay titled ‘We sacrifice our souls on the altar of employability’ looked at the potential drawbacks if university values are allowed to wither. He argued that ‘quality assurance processes have, paradoxically, constrained quality by discouraging diverse approaches to learning.” Although the report is measured and talks of risk, tendencies and concerns the reporting of it was more dramatic. The front page story had the headline ‘Academia has sold out, 72% believe’ and described the report as “explosive new research”. The story also appeared in the Society supplement of the Times.

The articles are based is a monograph called Higher Education and the Human Good edited by Professor McNay and Jennifer Bone, former pro vice-chancellor of the University of West England.

Greenwich Maritime Institute

Professor Sarah Palmer, Director of the GMI, reviewed a book on shipping containers called The Box: How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the

Economy Bigger in the Times Higher Education Supplement.

General campus news

RSVP  magazine lists the university as one of six locations in Maritime Greenwich which is available for events booking.

Pablo Imani is showing his work at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery according to the Greenwich Mercury.

The Lewisham News Shopper and the Bexley & Eltham Express gave advance publicity to the campus Open Day in the middle of the month.

Docklands News said that the university is one of six Greenwich venues which have made investments to make them more attractive as business meeting and conference centres.

Medway

School of Engineering

Kent Business said that studying for a degree in engineering at the campus is a good career choice.

Senior academics from a Chinese university visited the Wolfson Centre according to Professional Engineering and Kent Profile.

South East Business reported that school were linking up with Cummins Power Generation to provide engineering courses to their employees.

In his regular column in Kent Profile Professor Alan Reed explained the efforts that were being made locally to address the local ‘education gap’ raised by the Council for the Protection of Rural England.

The Chemical Engineer said that the joint Greenwich and Surrey Quality in particulate based manufacturing project was on the shortlist for The Chemistry Innovation KTN Ward for Innovation in Applied Catalysis and Colloid Science at the Institute of Chemistry Gala Awards (IChemE) 2006. According to Materials Handling World online the Wolfson Centre was highly commended at the awards.

School of Science

Building Talk online, Kentish Saturday Observer and Kent on Sunday reported that Carbon8 Systems, the first major spin-out company from the University of Greenwich, scooped the prestigious Green Chemical Technology Award.

Biomedical Scientist reported that Lauren Baker was the winner of the Institute of Biomedical Science President’s Prize at Greenwich.

Former member of staff Dr Alasdair Bruce was the subject of a front cover and full page article in Kent on Sunday. The captions read ‘The Rock Doc – Kent’s geological expert with an eye on the past and a burning desire to share his knowledge’ and ‘Rocking all over the natural world.’

School of Pharmacy

The Medway Standard reported on Alison Coll’s trip to a major pharmaceutical conference in Australia.

General campus news

The Medway Messenger had a photo and caption about the Freshers’ Fair.

The Open Day at the campus last month was well attended according to the Medway Standard.

Jonathan Chandler, Accommodation Services Manager, explained the advice that was available to students living outside hall of residences about the dangers of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning in the Medway Standard.

Paul Clark MP was giving the first Pembroke lecture of this series about his career and the future of Medway and north Kent according to the Medway Standard.

Potential students can find out about the campus at an Open day on Saturday October 21 according to the Dartford Messenger, Medway Messenger and Medway Standard.

Kent Life had a two page article on the Universities at Medway including a large section and photos on Greenwich.

Medway Matters (Council magazine) reported on the Kent & Medway Lifelong Learning Network led by Greenwich.

South East Business reported that the restoration and refurbishment of the Drill Hall Library had received an architectural award from Medway Council.

Medway Messenger carried a report on the campus Open Day on October 21 including a photograph of the event.

Kent on Sunday and the Kentish Saturday Observer said that an agreement had been signed giving the public access to the Drill Hall Library.

The new Pilkington Building was correctly described as being jointly run by the University of Greenwich and University of Kent by the Medway Messenger.
