The Daily Telegraph, Independent, Times and Guardian noted Vice-Chancellor Tessa Blackstone’s birthday.

The Times Higher Education Supplement and New Civil Engineer said that Chung Qing Li had been appointed as the first Atkins Professor of Civil Engineering.

The Times Higher Education Supplement listed Natasha Bedingfield at Greenwich in a list of pop stars with a university background.

E-consultancy online said that Greenwich’s experience using a Content Management System for their web services will be the focus of a breakfast seminar at the Adam Street private members club in London.

The lower tuition fees, £2,500 per year, available at Greenwich were referred to by the Sunday Times.

An article in the Mail on Sunday about student finance included advice from Lorri Currie, Head of Student Finance. She said that students should take socialising into consideration when planning their budget and take advantage of cheaper student activities and facilities, super saver fares and preparing meals for themselves.

Portsmouth Today online reported that Geography student, Jenny Runnacles, has been crowned London’s Most Enterprising Student 2006. Jenny, who was supported by Greenwich, took part in the Shell Step programme and spent the summer working on a research and development project for Ming Foods in Kent.

According to the Sun Greenwich offer a course that includes options on Complementary Therapies.

The Medway Messenger, KM Extra and the Colchester & Mersea Weekly News reported on award of the REID architectural student awards for design to two Diploma in Architecture students, Elizabeth Jacobs and Paula Robertson.

Garden Design Journal had a profile on Greenwich alumna Lady Arabella Lennox-Boyd.

Elizabeth Turpin gained a 1st class honours in Housing Studies according to the Fenland Citizen.

Andrew Culley who has a degree in Architecture from Greenwich has been appointed as the new architectural assistant at Cound Webber Architects according to the Cambridge Town Crier.

Greenwich graduate Shona Williams, associate architect with Land Use Consultants, is to the design team leader of a multi-million pound scheme to landscape as part of the World Class Stratford Initiative reported the Stratford-Upon-Avon Herald.

Animal Health News said that Hadlow College is a partner college of Greenwich in an article about the Kent college.

According to the Faversham News ‘Art Teacher’ graduate Frances Easter taught teenagers how to manipulate photographs during a course at Faversham Community College.

Kettering Evening Telegraph said that Lauren Hall has won a scholarship at Bird College and will be living in accommodation at Greenwich.

The Asia Times online mentioned Business graduate Polo Zhang as an example of a returning overseas Chinese seeking job opportunities in China. Adding that China, concerned about a shortage of skilled labour, was looking at encouraging talented individuals back to the country. Such individuals are known as ‘sea turtles’ as like migrating turtles they return home.

Computing & Mathematical Sciences

Professor Ed Galea explained the likelihood of plane crashes and passenger survival in the Radio Times, BBC Focus . He also discussed measures that passengers could take to increase their chance of survival and said that he carries a smoke hood on planes and while staying at hotels.

The US based My Way, All Headlines News,  and Reuters website said that Professor Galea had said that more evacuation fire drills were essential in New York and other cities at a New York conference to learn lessons from the 9/11 attack. He was also quoted in the Metro as saying that occupants of the Twin Towers did not leave the buildings quickly enough.

Martin Snowden, Director of Research, was one of those quoted in the Guardian in a feature about the way that different universities might be affected by the possible use of a ‘metrics’ based system for research funding. He said that the work that Greenwich does for industry is unrecognised by the existing system.

The first ever Music & Architecture Week including lectures by Charles Brooking of the Brooking Collection of Architectural Detail and Dr Alan Powers of the School of Architecture & Construction was given advance publicity by the Guide, Thamesmead Chronicle and Wharf magazine.

Meridian magazine, Docklands magazine, the Wharf, the Greenwich & Blackheath News Shopper and The Guide gave advance publicity to the Painting in the Park exhibition by Frances Treanor, the first artist in residence for Greenwich Park.

School of Engineering

Medway Messenger, Kent on Sunday and the Kentish Saturday Observer had articles on how studying for a degree in engineering at the campus could be a good career choice.

The Medway Standard had an article appeal from PhD student Amy Lewington who was appealing for volunteers to help with her research into the ways that technology could help pupils with celebral palsy in the classroom.

Greenwich has provided advice for a low-cost machine based on a simple linear system that can produce decorative wooden posts according to Eureka- Innovative Engineering Design online.

Joe Little, the Head of Millwall’s Football Clubs Academy has a First Class Honours Degree in Sports Science from Greenwich according to icsouthlondon website.

The property section of the Times (Bricks & Mortar) referred to the increase in student numbers on the campus in an item on St. Mary’s Island.

The Kent Ambassadors made a visit to the campus according to the Medway Standard.

The Medway News and Medway Standard publicised the Freshers’ fortnight being organised by the Universities at Medway Students’ Association.

Medway Council have been looking at newly qualified teachers from Greenwich to fill their vacancies according to the Medway Standard.

Medway Messenger gave advance publicity to the campus open day on Wednesday September 20.
