The Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP, made his first major speech on education at the University of Greenwich. He was joined on the Greenwich Campus by the Secretary of State for Children, Schools & Families, Ed Balls MP, at an event hosted by Tessa Blackstone, Vice-Chancellor.
Coverage of the speech began beforehand on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. Sky News and BBC News 24 broadcast live from the event. Channel 4 News, the Evening Standard, London Paper, together with the Press Association, This is Worcestershire, Lancashire Evening Telegraph, and SFS (insurer for independent education) websites covered the speech later that day.

The Mail on Sunday speaking about developments in Folkestone reported about ‘(Roger) De Haan’s attempt to stop the ‘brain drain’ from Folkestone by opening a branch of the University of Greenwich.
John Humphreys, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research & Enterprise), argued that the West should help African universities not only offer degrees but also cut poverty in an article in the Times Higher Education Supplement.
An obituary in the Guardian for James Harding, a writer and broadcaster who specialised in music and theatre, said that he taught French at Greenwich for 15 years.
South East Business reported that new research from Greenwich reveals that many A-level students are misinformed about university tuition fees.
Estates Gazette said that the University Centre Folkestone was being jointly run by Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church.

Invicta Radio interviewed Alec Coutroubis about his research showing that Kent had enough sun to make solar power practical for home use.

Among the highlights of a PowdermatriX, a network of over 200 organisations for particulate engineering, conference were guidelines proposed by University of Greenwich for equipment design for powder handling and delivery to the press shoe to minimise chemical segregation effects.

George won four gold medals, two silvers and was part of the Men’s Relay Medley team which set a new world record.

Natural Resources Institute
‘No flies on top research’ and ‘Killer fly research puts Kent on the Science map’. Your Medway, Kentish Saturday Observer, Kent on Sunday, Medway Messenger and Medway Extra reported on the nomination of Steve Torr’s tsetse research for the Times Higher Educational Supplement Research Project of the Year. The story also prompted praise in the letter column of Your Medway.
Peter Burt, biometeorologist and environmental science lecturer, looked at some of the issues regarding power generation in the Medway News following controversy over a possible new local coal-fired power station.
According to the Medway Standard, Medway News,and Medway Messenger Professor John Morton contributed to the work of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change which has just been jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was one of the 450 lead authors of their fourth report.
Medway Messenger reported that NRI were helping establish a new university in Nigeria. The project included 32 students from Kebbi State University studying at the campus according to the Medway News.

The Universities at Medway campus was highly commended in the Heritage led Project of the Year category at the Regeneration & Renewal Awards according to the Medway Standard.
According to KM Extra the Medway Innovation Centre on Rochester Industrial Estate, which is a joint venture with BAe Systems, Royal Bank of Scotland, Medway Council and the University of Kent, is enjoying great success.
A new short course centre has opened at the campus according to the Medway Messenger and KM Extra.
The Medway Messenger publicised the campus Open Day.
Local sixth-form pupils were given a glimpse into higher education through a series of campus visits according to the Medway News.
