The Daily Telegraph reported that Chaplain Paul Filmer has been appointed Vicar of Yalding.

 

RIBA Journal and Meridian reported that the university is planning a design competition for Stockwell Street where it is proposed to build a new School of Architecture & Construction and Library.

 

In Times Higher Education Peter Fotheringham, Head of Estates, said that the economic downturn had allowed the university to acquire an excellent site in Greenwich for a new School of Architecture & Construction and Library.

 

Times Higher EducationMasthead (the South East London Chamber of Commerce newsletter) and South East Business magazine reported that a co-operation agreement had been signed between Greenwich and the Federation for Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).

According to the Epping Forest Guardian it is planned to expand a successful mentoring scheme for Waltham Forest College students and have a launch at the University of Greenwich.

According to the Daily Mail, the Sun and the Waltham Forest Guardian a member of Britain’s Got Talent winners Diversity, Ike Ezekugo (20), is due to graduate in Human Resource Management this summer. The Sun also reported that fellow member Terry Smith (24) is a Greenwich IT graduate.

 

Professional Investor reported that Nigel Chutoo, business technology auditor at Goldman Sachs and International Marketing graduate, has become a member of the CFAUK (Chartered Financial Analyst) society.

 

Emma Lathey, Tourism Management graduate and member of the derivatives settlement team at Nomura International, was the focus of a profile in Securities & Investment Review. She was the winner in this year’s settlements category of the Badenoch & Clark Rising Star Awards.

 

According to New Civil Engineer, Stephen Thomas, Professor of Energy Studies cited problems that EDF were having with the new Flamanville nuclear reactor.

 

Games card and playing card manufacturer Richard Edward worked with Greenwich on an export strategy according to Works Management.

 

Stephen Thomas, Professor of Energy Studies had an article published on the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists website titled The demise of the pebble bed modular reactor.

 

Junior Adams from Redbridge College, who is planning to study Business at Greenwich, was among those given an award by the college for overcoming challenges and becoming a role model for others according to the Ilford & Redbridge Advertiser and Wanstead & Woodford Guardian.

According to Report on Business website and the Canadian based Globe & Mail Stephen Thomas, Professor of Energy Studies argued that the suspension of Ontario’s nuclear power station places a question mark over Atomic Energy of Canada.

 

Computing & Mathematical Sciences

 

Computer Science was the highest scoring in the country in the National Student Satisfaction survey according to the university league table in the Times.

 

The Guardian university league table rated the Mathematics Department as 4th in the UK, after Oxford, Cambridge and Warwick.

 

Greenwich is taking part in a new project led by GE Aviation Systems to create information displays with enhanced readability in bright lighting conditions called ENDVIEW according to the Engineer, EE Times Deutschland and New Electronics.

The Wharf, News Shopper and Greenwich Mercury reported that former Apprentice star Margaret Mountford was the star guest at a Greenwich ‘moot’ or mock trial for the Law department.

 

The Guardian reviewed the performance at the Roundhouse by lecturer Caroline Smith which looked at our relationship with food.

In a letter to the Financial Times Professor Louise de La Fayette, Visiting Professor at GMI, talking about an industry boss going undercover to learn more about his company said that Shakespeare got there first, in Henry V.

The university is contributing a number of events to the Create Festival organised by the Greenwich Society including architecture tours, an art exhibition and Restoration dance according to the Greenwich Mercury and Bexleyheath & Welling News Shopper.

 

The Stephen Lawrence Gallery is hosting the ReFramed exhibition including art by ex-offenders and those with drug addiction backgrounds according to the Greenwich Mercury.

The News Shopper reported that graduate Sarah Eberle won three medals at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

 

According to Garden Design Journal, Lambeth Life and the Southwark News the Post-graduate landscape architecture students exhibited their finals projects at the Menier Gallery in an exhibition called Metamorphosis – Emerging landscapes.

 

Woodworker magazine reported that the university houses the Brooking Collection of Architectural Detail.

East Kent Mercury and Dover Mercury reported that Chris Philpott, former Folkstone teacher and member of the Betteshanger Colliery Brass Band, has been appointed Head of the School of Education & Training.

 

Health & Social Care

 

Double Olympian Roger Black launched the Explore Healthcare Summer School according to the Greenwich Mercury.

 

In Community Care Lynn Baxter reviewed a book called Promoting the emotional well-being and mental health of unaccompanied young people seeking asylum in the UK .

 

Lynn Baldock, mental health nursing student, spent a two week placement at the Veterans Association hospital in Washington according to the Nursing Standard.

 

Kerri Wright had an article published in the British Journal of Nursing titled Developing methods for solving drug dosage calculations.

 

According to PR Web website research by Dr Oliver Robinson among those who had been on a pre-retirement course had a 19 per cent increase in satisfaction with life in retirement.

School of Engineering

 

A Saudi education chief tests out our university according to a headline in Kent on Sunday. This referred to a visit by the governor of the Technical & Vocational Training Corporation to the School of Engineering.

 

The new Public Health Engineering degree and bursaries for the first year in the subject were publicised by Kent on Sunday.

 

Medway News, Kent Messenger and Medway Messenger reported that French engineering students will spend a year at Greenwich as part of a new link with the Catholic University of Lille.

 

School of Science

 

Manufacturing Chemist reported that a team led by Dr John Spencer at Greenwich have worked with Strathclyde University and company Thales-Nano to develop a drug against the parasite that causes African Sleeping Sickness.

 

According to the Municipal Journal former member of staff Gesche Schmid has joined the Local Government Association’s analysis & research unit as the lead geographical information policy expert.

 

Rob Carter, England Schoolboys and Maidstone United football player is planning to study at Greenwich according to Medway Messenger and Kent Messenger.

 

Medway Messenger and Kent Messenger reported that Science student Amy Tanner is working with the Medway Public Health Team’s Mind, Exercise, Nutrition and Do-It (MEND) project to help fight against childhood obesity.

John Morton’s contribution to the Nobel Peace Prize win by a group of scientists was mentioned by Kent on Sunday as a possible entry to the Kent’s Top 100 All-Time greatest people list.

 

Medway Messenger gave advance publicity to the Science should be fun public lecture.

 

According to Times Higher Education and Kent on Sunday Steve Belmain is leading a team of experts to tackle an explosion in Bangladesh’s rat population.

 

Kent on Sunday reported that a ‘crack’ team from NRI has picked up a prestigious award after helping aubergine farmers in South Asia control pests.

 

Professor Bob Cheke’s work assessing the environmental impact of Quelea bird control in Southern Africa was reported on by Botswana TV this month. This is just one of a series of media appearances including, an acknowledgement as adviser for the BBC1 programmes Swarm: Nature's Incredible Invasions which were broadcast in January, an interview by Tanzanian TV in February, the following month his work was mentioned in the Swahili language newspaper Mwananchi and in May his work was acknowledged in the Botswana Gazette .

The work of the university to raise aspirations and skills in Swale were the focus of Stuart Ashenden’s article in Kent Profile.

 

KM Extra reported that Greenwich had a double win in the Medway Boat Race.

 

Kent on Sunday and Kent Director reported that Andrew Metcalf, Director of Maxim PR, has been appointed Vice-Chairman of the Institute of Directors in Kent. Maxim do some PR work for Greenwich particularly in Medway and Kent.

 

Medway News and Medway Messenger said that the campus was hosting an event next month in the ‘University of Greenwich’s Pilkington building’ for elderly people with disabilities or special needs to find out about the services that are available to them.

 

Property Week cited the joint campus as an example of the successful regeneration of Chatham Maritime.
