Sorrell Foundation Young Design Programme

Greenwich University traces its roots to 1890, when Britain’s second polytechnic was opened near the Thames at Woolwich to teach practical and commercial skills to London workers. The name Thames Polytechnic was adopted in 1970, and they became the University of Greenwich when they were awarded university status in 1992.

This year students from Bexley College, Greenwich Community College, Lambeth College, Lewisham College, Southwark College and South Thames College, created design briefs which were developed by students from the School of Architecture, Design & Construction at Greenwich for the Young Design Programme.

200 students and 14 lecturers were involved in the Young Design Programme, sponsored by the South East London Lifelong Learning Network (SELLLN). The overall programme was managed by Anastasios Maragiannis, Senior Lecturer in Graphic and 3D Digital Design at University of Greenwich and Lucy Jenks, Lifelong Learning Co-ordinator, SELLLN.

The students were mentored by Eric Parry Architects, Joanna Pencakowski of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Mark Potter of Potter + Holmes Architects, Ian Allison, Creative Director at Bell Design and Stephan Bourgeois of Animation + Graphics Production.

Many thanks to Anastasios Maragiannis, Nicky Hirst, Liz Jones and Jamie Liversedge of University of Greenwich, Jane Campling and Sofie Pinkett of Bexley College, Gillian Jones of Greenwich Community College, Miriam Sorrentino and Paulette Collier of Lambeth College, Cash Aspeek, Christine Barrow, Nik Cornwell and Tanya Paget of Lewisham College, Yvonne Belfron, Paul Cairns and Jane Draper, of South Thames College, and Jennifer Hankin and Tessa Limb of Southwark College.
