Additional Haas Lathe

A1674---HAAS-loanEngineering employers have the opportunity to equip their employees with the most up-to-date skills and oil the cogs of the economy thanks to Haas Automation UK. The leading tool manufacturer has loaned a valuable computer aided lathe to the Renishaw Centre for Manufacturing Productivity at the University of Greenwich at Medway. The donation will enable the centre to provide even greater tool manufacturing experience for undergraduates, apprentices and businesses.

The Renishaw Centre provides contemporary manufacturing engineering education for small and medium enterprises that may otherwise struggle to train their employees. The centre is helping to combat the shortage of engineers which has long been seen as a constraint on UK industry.

Haas Automation, one of the world’s largest CNC machine tool manufacturers, has donated the SL-10 advanced lathe with a value of around £40,000. With one-third of tool machines bearing the Haas name, its machinery is often seen on technology TV shows such as ‘Orange County Chopper’ on the Discovery Channel.

Ian Cakebread, Support Services Manager at Medway says:

“The university is keen to reflect developments in industrial practice in its teaching and training and we are very thankful to Haas for the loan of this machine. I see our engagement with Haas, a company with an international reputation, as being an endorsement of the university’s standing with industry.

“The addition of the Haas SL-10 to our workshop enables the centre to demonstrate the use of tool probing and an automatic tool turret in a CNC Turning Centre, a significant advantage for individuals looking to reduce time cycles and operator costs.”

About the Renishaw Productivity Centre:

Renishaw plc has launched a nationwide education initiative with selected H&FE institutions, which will create a network of "Productivity Centres" to ensure that SMEs throughout the country have access to contemporary manufacturing engineering education.

A course has been developed based around a concept called the Productive Process Pyramid ™, which is used to systematically identify and control sources of variation in machining processes, resulting in increased automation, improved process control, and reduced scrap and rework.

The School of Engineering has been appointed as a provider in the network of Renishaw Productivity Centres, each equipped with contemporary machine tools and Renishaw metrology equipment, as well as education facilities.

About the HAAS SL-10 CNC Turning Machine:

Haas Automation's SL-10 provides a generous 279 mm turning diameter, 356 mm turning length and a 413 mm swing over the front apron.

The SL-10 comes standard with a 165 mm hydraulic chuck and a 12-position bolt-on tool turret. A 15-hp (peak) vector drive spindle provides speeds to 6,000 rpm for high surface feedrates, and an A2-5 spindle nose accepts bar stock up to 44 mm.
