Research

Welcome from the Director of Research, Dr Steve Woodhead BSc (Eng) PhD MIET MBCS CEng CITP
The demands placed upon engineers today require a high degree of competence in a range of disciplines, from analytical skills in technical areas, to professional skills in management and communications. We welcome applicants for MPhil and PhD research programmes. Details of how to apply to study on one of these programmes are available from the Office of Student Affairs. Our research activities are organized into five research groups. You may like to contact our postgraduate tutor Dr Raj Bhatti or a research group leader to discuss technical aspects of your research topic before you apply.
The Wolfson Centre For Bulk Solids Handling Technology
The Centre carries out leading edge research into a wide range of problems associated with the handling and storage of granular and powder materials, including the design of hoppers and silos, the design of pneumatic conveyors and a wide range of product quality related challenges. The Centre enjoys a wide range of industrial collaboration, including a long-standing link with Glaxo Smith Kline (Leader: Prof M Bradley).
Electronics Manufacturing Engineering Research Group (EMERG)
EMERG has a strong track record in the research of leading edge techniques for electronics manufacturing and assembly and enjoys strong industry links, including a long standing collaboration with Henkel Technologies (Leader: Prof N N Ekere).
Computer and Communications Engineering Research Group
This group is based around the Wireless and Mobile Communication Research Laboratory and undertakes a range of development and modelling work for leading edge wireless communication techniques, working closely with and contributing widely to a number of IEEE societies. The group is also undertaking a number of leading-edge projects in information and network security technologies (Leader: Prof P Rapajic).
Infrastructure Management Research Group
Much of the work of this group is related to the testing and analysis of concrete and concrete structures, including degradation and failure analysis and the management of maintenance. This group also has a number of strong industrial collaborations in this area, including a strong link with WS Atkins Plc (Leader: Prof C Q Li).
Innovative Product Development
This expanding research centre investigates strategic problems in the critical stages of new product introduction and development, and develops solutions and enabling technologies, such as information and knowledge management, decision support and product lifecycle management frameworks, for the global manufacturing business (Leader: Prof J Gao).
