Ideas From The Past

Some interesting pictures from "Electricity In Modern Life" by G W de Tunzelmann, dated 1889 (all are available at higher resolution, just click on them).

Top left: A long row of female operators connect lines between subscribers in this early manual telephone exchange.

Top right: The Hughes's Type-Printing Telegraph was the only machine of its kind to be employed to any considerable extent in Europe.

Bottom left: An electric tricycle, made to the order of the Sultan of Turkey. Note the rather dangerous steering tiller, and the star and crescent logos!

Bottom right: Included for the sheer beauty of the engraving, a compact dynamo by Messrs Mather & Platt of Manchester
