Kate Coughlan Awarded Prize

The GMI staff and students congratulate Kate Coughlan who was awarded the 2009 prize for outstanding achievement in maritime history by the Marine Society & Sea Cadets at their Annual Court on 14th October 2009.

Throughout her MA Maritime History Kate consistently produced work of a high standard and this was never more the case than in the final element of the degree programme, the 20,000 word dissertation in maritime history. Kate's original piece of research 'Drawing and Seaferers in the Eighteenth and Early Nineteenth Century: An Insight into the 'Wooden Word', looked into the artistic material produced by seaferers in their logs, journals and scrapbooks and provided a new insight into their lives, environment and interaction with each other. Kate brought together all of the skills and knowledge she had developed throughout the MA programme and acheived a dinstinction for her dissertation and was awarded the full MA with distinction in July 2009.

The GMI would like to thank the Marine Society & Sea Cadets for awrding this prize and would also like to wish Kate Coughlan the best of luck in her future career.
