TRAN1004 - Sources, Methods and Archives for Maritime Historians

This course provides the basis for the student's own research in connection with other elements of the programme, in particular the 20,000 word dissertation. Students will be encouraged to relate their work to the likely area of investigation for their dissertation. The course will allow students to familiarise themselves with the main sources, library and archival collections available to those researching British maritime history since the late 18th century as well as developing their skills in the formulation of research topics, planning, modes of analysis and the scholarly presentation of results. Students should therefore become aware of the range and types of primary evidence which may be available to maritime historians, including manuscripts, printed material, newspapers and journals, paintings, plans, maps, photographs, film artefacts and oral reports.
