Themes in British Maritime History Since the Late 18th Century: The Royal Navy

Using a broadly thematic approach, this course introduces students to key developments in the Royal Navy from the late 18th century, and to the state of the current scholarly debate on these issues. It will enable students to develop knowledge and critical understanding of significant aspects of Britain's naval history in the modern period. Students will gain an analytical appreciation of the political, strategic, technological, economic and social factors influencing British naval development as well as being conversant with debates surrounding the major issues. Topics covered in this course include manning the navy; discipline and authority; surveying and exploration; the coming of steam; the 'Fisher era', and the protection of trade.

 

Students are assessed on two essays of 2000 words.
