I am a qualified social worker and have been a Senior Lecturer at the University of Greenwich since 2001. In practice as a social worker I worked with young people who were looked after or on the fringes of the care system, in juvenile justice, YOT teams and residential settings. As a university lecturer I contribute to courses which focus upon young people and currently co-ordinate the Theoretical and Social Perspectives on Children and Young People course which looks at varying paradigms, research evidence and policy relating to these groups. I also contribute to the Investigating Children and their Childhoods course, looking at research methods and ethics with these groups, as well as co-ordinating the Project for Professional Social Work Practice course.

My social work career and my university teaching have also influenced my research interests, particularly in relation to teenage pregnancy and researching vulnerable young people. My first research project focussed on young mothers in the care system, looking at their systems of support and personal relationships. More recently I have been involved with two projects on young fathers, one in the UK with white young men and the other in the US with black young fathers, again looking at their relationships and patterns of support with family and professionals. Currently I am involved in a project looking at young fathers and the relationships they have with their own mothers and editing a book on multi-professional approaches to working with young fathers. In addition, as Research Lead for the Department of Family Care and Mental Health I am involved with facilitating colleagues to pursue research funding and present their findings at National and International conferences.
