The Credit for Learning Centre
Making Learning Count - ways in which we can help you
The growing commitment to lifelong learning and professional advancement recognizes that a great deal of learning can and does take place outside the formal institutional structures of the university. This may either be through participation in formal courses, or training programmes that are provided by off-campus agencies and institutions, for example by an employer, a professional body or specific interest groups.
The Credit for Learning Centre provides a dedicated service to organizations and individuals to maximize opportunities to make such learning count in the following ways:
- Credit Rating
- Accreditation of Prior Learning
Credit Rating
Credit-rating is the process by which the university makes a judgement about the volume and level of academic credit which can be allocated to structured learning derived from formal courses or training programmes offered by organisations external to the university. This is a rigorous process to ensure comparability with university-run courses.
Accreditation of Prior Learning
APCL - accreditation of prior certificated learning (sometimes known as transfer credit). This is credit claimed by individuals for prior certificated learning that has been formally assessed.
APEL - accreditation of prior experiential learning. This is credit claimed by individuals for learning that has not been formally assessed. Credit is claimed, usually in the form of a portfolio, for learning from experience.
The Credit for Learning Team acts on behalf of the School of Health and Social Care, Learning and Quality Office, working with organisations external to the university in the development of courses for credit rating.
