Genetic Nursing Conference

2nd June 2010

‘RELATING GENETICS/GENOMICs TO NURSING AND MIDWIFERY PRACTICE’

The School has supported the implementation of the National Strategy, ‘Fit for practice in the Genetics Era’ (2003) since 2004 for preparing future nurses and midwives to provide basic care to clients with genetic disorder. We are helping our pre-registration students achieve these competencies by directing them to relevant learning opportunities through a handbook and Web CT based programmes supported by their personal tutor who are in turn guided by a colleague from their discipline experienced in genetics. It is now a requirement that all students complete these competencies as part of their pre-registration.

Our clients have access to a plethora of scientific papers from web sites and are often very well informed of contemporary developments as well as management of certain genetic disorders. It is therefore helpful for health care workers to understand how new genetic / genomic developments are contributing to better assessment and management of genetic disorders.

The themes of the conference will be relating genetics/genomics concepts to specific domains in:

Midwifery Practice

Adult Nursing

Mental Health Nursing

Children Nursing &

Learning Disability Nursing.
