Keynote speaker: Professor David M. Clark, Institute of Psychiatry
The Department of Psychology and Counselling at the University of Greenwich is delighted to announce that Professor David M. Clark will be giving this year’s Annual Psychology Lecture.
David M. Clark is Professor of Psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College, London. His research focuses on cognitive approaches to the understanding and treatment of anxiety disorders. In collaboration with colleagues, the research has led to the development of new and effective cognitive therapy programmes for panic disorder, hypochondriasis, social phobia and posttraumatic stress disorder. Professor Clark has been instrumental in the UK Government’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) initiative. Working closely with Richard Layard, a distinguished economist, David Clark argued that many persistent anxiety disorders and depression in the community could be alleviated if evidence-based psychological therapies could be made more widely available in the National Health Service. Layard and Clark’s work helped secure a manifesto commitment in the 2005 General Election which has subsequently been acted upon by the release of £306 million to train and employ an extra 3,600 psychological therapists in bespoke psychological treatment services for anxiety disorders and depression. David Clark has been one of the main architects of IAPT and has been appointed the National Clinical Advisor for the programme.
You are invited to attend his lecture on ‘Cognitive Therapy for Anxiety Disorders: From Science to Practice and Policy’ on 4th March 2010, 5-6pm in Queen Anne 080 at the Greenwich Maritime Campus.
