Return to Practice for Nurses
The Return to Practice for Nurses Programme has been developed and validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) to enable qualified nurses who have been out of clinical practice for three years or more to achieve the learning outcomes identified by the NMC (2006) for re-registration on the professional register in either Adult, Mental Health, Learning Disability or Children’s Nursing.
Pre-requisites:
- qualified nurses who lapsed registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) UK after a career break of 3 years or more
or - qualified nurses who have not met the PREP (practice) standard of completing the minimum of 450 hours of practice during the three years prior to renewal of registration
- all applicants must be nominated by healthcare organisation that can offer relevant clinical experience
Applicants will be required to demonstrate that they have good health and good character on entry to the course and for continued participation during the course. This will be determined by health screening, CRB check, and provision of suitable references.
Application and selection process
Applicants for this course must be nominated by a healthcare organisation and complete a University of Greenwich application form with supporting evidence from the nominated healthcare organisation. The selection process will include literacy and numeracy exercise and an interview by a University of Greenwich lecturer and a senior member of staff from the nominating healthcare organisation.
Mode of study and course structure
The mode of study is part-time and is structured over one semester. Students will study at Level 5 or 6 with 30 credits on successful completion of the course. Students will attend 15 study days (3 blocks of 5 study days) plus supervised practice hours in clinical placements to achieve the required proficiencies.
Assessment
The assessment comprises of 3 parts. Students will submit a 3000 word reflective essay on clinical practice and complete a Practice Assessment Document having being assessed in clinical practice by a designated mentor and Sign Off mentor. Students will evidence progression and achievement through portfolio development.
Funding
The Return to Practice for Nurses Programme will be funded by the healthcare organisation that can offer the applicant clinical experience required by the course. There is no bursary attached to this course.
